Minyan Absence, Shul Stability, and the Importance of Daily Halachah Study

The Rebbe addresses the lack of a Minyan for Maariv as a sign of weakness in shul stability, not just communal prayer. He emphasizes keeping the shul open frequently and urges regular study of practical halachot, highlighting their centrality to daily Jewish life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

After your longest silence, your letter from the 17th of Cheshvan was received. Even in it, you do not mention the reason for your silence. Most importantly, even in this letter you do not mention how you utilized the days of the month of Tishrei—the general month for the entire year and filled with all good. One must draw this goodness into the rest of the months of the year. Hopefully, this is only a lack in writing and informing me, but all matters were indeed done completely.

Regarding what you wrote about there being no Minyan in your synagogue for Maariv: it would be worthwhile to try to correct this. This is not only a question of communal prayer but also concerns the consistency and strength of the synagogue itself. The owners and neighbors need to know that the synagogue is open as frequently as possible. Surely you are aware of the demand in previous generations and the aspiration that the synagogue be open all day and night so that everyone knows if they have a few free minutes they can enter into the four cubits of prayer or glance into a sefer, etc. The spiritual importance is great—and even its effect on daily life has been clearly seen.

On one hand I was pleased by what you wrote about various classes; however, I am surprised that I do not see a class in practical halachot needed for daily life. As I have written to several among Anash: ultimately "this is man's whole purpose: fear G‑d and keep His commandments."

Regarding what you wrote about Maorei Yisrael: surely you know that several articles on this topic have been published in Hashmuos and Talks... Enclosed is the recent Lubavitch journal; surely you will use its content to benefit many—merit for many depends on him.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that maintaining regular Minyanim strengthens both communal prayer and shul stability. He stresses keeping synagogues open often and prioritizing daily study of practical halachot as essential to Jewish life.
