The Yetzer Hara's Irrational Arguments and Overcoming Spiritual Struggles

The Rebbe writes that negative thoughts leading to spiritual and physical harm stem from the yetzer hara, which uses irrational arguments. By increasing diligence in Torah, prayer, and mitzvos, and seeking guidance from mentors, one can overcome these struggles and merit blessings.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Your letter from the 2nd of Cheshvan was received with the enclosed panim (requests for prayer), and as you requested, they will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory. Since all Jews are responsible for one another—and in your case there is also a family connection—the more you increase your diligence in study and persistence in prayer and perform mitzvos with extra care, the more G‑d's blessing will increase in the matters you wrote about in your panim. May G‑d grant you success to share good news in this regard...

Your letter from the 16th of MarCheshvan was just received with four panim to be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place.

Regarding what you write about your state of mind—this has already been addressed and explained in Tanya chapters 26–27 and onward. You see clearly that your thoughts about yourself lead to neglecting Torah study and even to the baseless idea of leaving yeshiva. This makes it clear these thoughts come from the yetzer hara (evil inclination), whose entire purpose is to fight against a person's spiritual and physical happiness using arguments that have no basis in sound reason. Their whole existence is "for Hashem is testing you," etc., and when one makes an effort and withstands the test—even he himself sees how all their imagined reality vanishes.

He should divert his mind from all these thoughts (without even entering into debate about them—rather by focusing on positive thoughts, for even a little light dispels much darkness) and ask his mashpia (spiritual mentor) and rosh yeshiva to arrange his studies properly, following their guidance. May G‑d grant him success.

Summary

The yetzer hara tries to undermine both spiritual and physical well-being with irrational doubts. The Rebbe teaches that by focusing on Torah study, mitzvos, positive thinking, and seeking guidance from mentors, one can overcome these struggles and receive G‑d's blessings.
