Clarifying Joy and Inwardness in Accepting the Torah, Tanya Study Challenges

The Rebbe explains that 'inwardness' in accepting the Torah means internalizing it personally, just as 'joy' means studying with happiness. He suggests discussing Tanya study difficulties with peers for greater clarity and notes many printing errors have been corrected.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter, where you ask about the meaning of the phrase 'accepting the Torah with joy and inwardness,' whether it refers to the inwardness of the Torah or of the learner. It is clear that just as 'with joy' means that the learner should study with happiness, so too regarding 'inwardness,' it means that the learner should absorb it internally.

Regarding your mention of a printing error in the Tanya, I do not know from which edition you are studying. In any case, many printing errors were corrected in Tanya editions from the year 5660 (1900) onward, and several more were corrected in the Tanya edition here (which was also sent in large quantities to Eretz HaKodesh).

Concerning your difficulty at times in studying Tanya: since there are several from Anash and Temimim present in Yerushalayim, you should present these matters to them; discussing together will illuminate these topics.

With blessing, on behalf of the Rebbe shlita, Secretary

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that both joy and inwardness are qualities to bring into Torah study—internalizing its lessons personally. When facing challenges in learning Tanya, discussing them with others can help bring clarity and understanding.
