Shalom u'Vrachah!
I was pleased to receive your regards through Haraha"ch iy"a nu"n one involved in tzt"z Moshe Eliyahu Gerlitzki, as well as the pan you sent, which will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal lehe nbgm zya.
Regarding what you write about being weighed down by your burden: this is not surprising, as it is written that G‑d created to do and to repair. It is also said that He formed man with two yuds—yetzer tov and yetzer ra. Therefore, when you see a donkey—as you look closely at your material self, which is the body—you will see 'your enemy,' meaning it opposes the soul that yearns for G‑dliness and spirituality. You will also see that it 'lies under its burden'—the burden that the Holy One gave the body so it would be refined through Torah and mitzvos, yet the body is lazy in fulfilling them. Perhaps you might think in your heart—'and you refrain from helping him'—that it can fulfill its mission only if you begin with self-afflictions to break materiality. However, this is not the way for the light of Torah to dwell; rather, 'you shall surely help him'—to clarify and refine the body, not break it through afflictions (one of the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov, quoted in Hayom Yom).
From this it is clear and obvious that one should not God forbid fall into despair over this. The reason for this is that Hashem, who is ultimate goodness, does not want a Jew to receive what he needs physically or spiritually as 'bread of shame.' Therefore creation was arranged as it says: 'See I have set before you life and good...' Immediately after comes 'and you shall choose life.' Chassidus explains that asking from Hashem itself gives power and additional strength to fulfill one's request. Surely you know this already; it is worthwhile to contemplate again what is explained in Tanya in several places—especially chapter 27 about two types of nachas ruach above—and further in chapter 34 onward. Contemplating all this leads one's service all his days to be with great joy.
Enclosed is a copy of my general letter for Rosh Hashanah. In addition to my blessings in my Rosh Hashanah letter, I repeat them here: for long good years and success in strengthening and spreading Judaism in your surroundings with true health and expanded mind.
With blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that inner struggles are part of G‑d's plan for our growth; we should approach these challenges with joy rather than despair, refining ourselves through Torah and mitzvos without resorting to self-affliction.
