Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from after Shavuos, in which you write that it is difficult for you to study for an extended time with proper concentration unless you are together with friends, and that you lack diligence, etc.
It is known that being attached to friends is one of the forty-eight ways through which Torah is acquired. As for what you wrote about your nature being lazy and lacking diligence—one can change their nature on their own, even though this happens gradually as it says: Me'at me'at agreshenu ("Little by little I will drive them out"). Not all at once from one extreme to the other. The order should be to add each day just a few more moments of study than the previous day. The learning itself should be in the area his heart desires, as our Sages said: B'makom shelibo chafetz ("in the place his heart desires"). Furthermore, do not spend a long time on one topic; when you feel fatigued, switch to another subject that interests you as above.
It is well known what our Sages said: Ilmalei HaKadosh Baruch Hu ozeroh ("If not for the Holy One's help...") and that G‑d only asks according to one's ability. From this we understand that everyone is given the strength to overcome their own inclination. Since in everything we need Heavenly assistance, set aside coins for charity frequently before Shacharis (morning prayer). After Shacharis each day, recite a portion of Tehillim as divided for the days of the month. Also establish a regular study session in Nishmasa d'Oraisa—this is the inner dimension of Torah revealed in Chassidus in our times. I am confident that if you follow all of the above, slowly but surely things will improve step by step.
Regarding your report about your wife's condition: It would be worthwhile to check the mezuzos in your home (if they have not been checked in the past twelve months), as well as your tefillin. Your wife surely follows the custom of Jewish women to give charity before lighting candles every Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom Tov. May Hashem grant her a healthy pregnancy and an easy birth at its proper time.
With blessing,
In the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that gradual progress and spiritual practices like charity and daily Tehillim help overcome challenges with studying alone and concentration. Consistency and small steps lead to improvement both spiritually and practically.
