Overcoming the Yetzer Hara’s Discouragement in Spiritual Growth

The Rebbe writes that feelings of not having gained anything are a tactic of the Yetzer Hara to weaken one's spiritual efforts. One should ignore such thoughts, strengthen their service of Hashem, and focus on Torah study, prayer, and helping others grow in Torah and mitzvos.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I am responding to your letter from 2 Teves and the previous one. You write that you have not gained anything over this time; you should know that this is part of the Yetzer Hara’s setup, meant to weaken you in matters of avodah in general and Torah study in particular, with the excuse that nothing will come from your efforts anyway.

As with all matters that come from the side of opposition, do not engage with them in debate; instead, one must strengthen oneself in serving Hashem Yisbarach. Through diverting your attention from these thoughts, you become free from them.

Regarding the other matter you wrote about: here too you should divert your attention from it and increase your involvement with words of Torah and prayer. Also, you should know by heart a few chapters of Tanya and a few chapters of Mishnayos, as well as the maamar "VeHadarta Pnei Zaken" in Likkutei Torah at the end of Parshas Kedoshim.

The main thing is as mentioned earlier: to divert your attention entirely from this whole matter—even for now from its rectification. Of course, your efforts to bring others closer to Torah and mitzvos draw down heavenly assistance for what you yourself need success in. Surely you are already doing so regarding your environment in general and your friends at yeshivah in particular. May Hashem grant you success.

Summary

When discouraging thoughts arise about one's spiritual progress, recognize them as tactics of the Yetzer Hara. Ignore such negativity, focus on Torah study and prayer, help others grow spiritually, and trust that Hashem will grant success.
