Disagreements in Chassidus, Understanding Tohu and Tikkun, and Practical Application

The Rebbe addresses disagreements in understanding Chassidus concepts, especially Tohu and Tikkun. He emphasizes learning the simple meaning first, then deeper levels, and stresses that the greatest Chassidus insight must lead to practical change in thought, speech, and action.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter regarding the disagreements you have had in understanding concepts from Chassidic discourses with Anash with whom you spoke—especially regarding the topic of Tohu and Tikkun. According to your view, this concept extends from the highest level to the lowest, and you explain it with fitting explanations, but not everyone agrees with your interpretation.

In most cases, concepts that exist at all are present from the highest level to the lowest because there is a Seder Hishtalshelus (order of spiritual descent), where one level descends from another. Naturally, in each place and level of Hishtalshelus it exists in a way appropriate for that place and level. Similarly to Avraham Avinu whose attribute is Chesed of Atzilus; yet he said "Va'anochi afar va'efer" (I am dust and ashes), which is a difference not only in quantity but also in quality.

This understanding can also be derived from the saying of our Sages: "The light created on the first day allowed Adam HaRishon to see from one end of the world to the other," which is meant literally. Chassidus explains a deeper meaning: that this refers to both Alma De'Isgalya (the revealed world) and Alma De'Iskasya (the hidden world), which are completely different from physical light below—where one sees only with physical eyes in this material world. Both aspects are included in this saying of our Sages.

See also in Reshimos HaTzemach Tzedek on Megillas Eichah p. 26ff., regarding the explanation of Ariyeh (lion) on many levels that are far apart from each other—from one extreme to another.

However, one must not forget that when learning a concept, one must first learn it with its simple meaning before thinking about how it applies in higher or lower worlds. The same applies regarding Tohu and Tikkun: the simple meaning according to the Sod (secret) part of Torah is that Olam HaTohu was destroyed so as to build Olam HaTikkun where we now find ourselves (although according to the Arizal's approach Olam HaTohu was not a physical world like ours; other Kabbalists differ and hold that even Tohu was similar to our world—see Torah Or Parshas Shemos 51d and Toras Chaim there). After learning the concept as explained simply in Sod of Torah, one can find its application above or below this level.

Especially regarding soul powers—see Toras Chaim Parshas Noach p. 67b at length.

You surely know what is brought in many talks of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal: that even the greatest intellectual insight from Chassidus must bring about an actual change—in thought, speech, and action. And since it is not always easy to derive such practical outcomes from intellectual discourses of Chassidus—especially in our generation—it is essential to learn discourses focused on avodah (service). There one sees practical outcomes without extra effort; therefore an important part of your study should certainly be in maamarim focused on avodah...

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that deep understanding of Chassidus must begin with its simple meaning before exploring higher interpretations. Most importantly, true comprehension leads to practical improvement in thought, speech, and action—a goal best achieved through studying maamarim focused on avodah.
