Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter in due time, and due to the preoccupations of the month of Tishrei I was unable to respond until now...

Regarding what you wrote about the distressing question... What benefit is there in consolations that people offer themselves and others with trivialities, while at the same time the souls of the students cry out bitterly with an inner voice that is not heard? Their claim is: our desire and will is to study in an institution founded by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory, conducted specifically in his spirit and intention. Instead, there are several classes learning 'mada' (secular studies) introduced by the maskilim during their battle against all that is holy to Israel, wasting our precious time (even non-religious educators agree that from an educational standpoint, the 'Ivrit b'Ivrit' method wastes students’ time). Meanwhile, we could be learning Torah of Moshe, His commandments and Jewish customs—which are also Torah—and there isn't enough time because of stubbornness regarding this method, the abundance of secular studies, etc. Furthermore, in some classes secular studies are even prioritized before sacred studies. It is well known the saying of the tzt"z that the beginning influences all that follows. Moreover, boys and girls study together even at ages when this is entirely inappropriate. Additionally, some teachers are not G‑d-fearing, which inevitably affects both male and female students.

All responses and excuses for this—whose general theme is that there are places even worse than this or that for each issue someone else is to blame so it’s not my responsibility—are invalid. It is clear that the students are not at fault for any of this. It is equally clear that 'all of you who cleave to Hashem your G‑d are alive today,' and it is also clear that cleaving to Hashem comes only through His Torah and mitzvos; there is no other way.

It is already known by way of analogy: a small damage to a seed or a young tree has far greater impact than a large damage to an old tree. May Hashem grant success to each one of us so it will be engraved in our memory what Admor Maharash said: 'You cannot deceive Hashem; you cannot deceive people either; you can only deceive yourself.' May this be fulfilled practically and as soon as possible so true success will follow in your work and communal activities—and consequently also in your personal matters.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that rationalizations do not excuse compromising on Torah values—especially in education—and true integrity means recognizing we can only fool ourselves but never Hashem or others.
