Excuses for Not Studying Chasidus Come from the Yetzer Hara

The Rebbe writes that the reasons given for not studying Chasidus are merely excuses from the Yetzer Hara. He encourages prioritizing essential matters, acting with Ahavas Yisrael, and arranging the wedding in Kislev, the month of redemption, with joy and expanded consciousness.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Parshas Vayeilech in which you write the reasons why it was not possible to arrange the wedding in Elul: after all explanations, these are minor compared to the main issues for which it was not worthwhile to delay. My intention is not to criticize the past but to encourage you regarding the future—that at least it should be arranged in Kislev, the upcoming month of redemption. May it be at a good and successful time.

Regarding whether your conduct with your future in-laws should be "like water reflects a face" or otherwise: it is clear that your conduct should indeed be like water reflects a face, but according to its true meaning—what is inside and genuine. Without a doubt, both your future in-laws and his wife are good; it is just necessary to bring this goodness from concealment into revelation. One way to do this is by relating to them with general Ahavas Yisrael (love of a fellow Jew), with added closeness due to your soon-to-be family relationship—since a son-in-law is like a son. To elaborate on such an obvious matter would be unnecessary.

As for what you wrote about finding obstacles in studying Chasidus due to lack of a suitable teacher, etc.—it is clear that this too comes only from the persuasion of the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination), who is skilled at his craft as our Sages say. He entices each person with arguments tailored specifically for him. Even the old and foolish king (Yetzer Hara) understands that if he were to come and say: "Do not study Chasidus because it brings one to love and fear of G‑d (see Rambam Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah beginning of chapter 4), and infuses vitality even into learning Nigleh (revealed Torah) and mitzvah observance, thereby connecting you to the Tree of Life as explained in Zohar III p.124b," surely then no one would listen at all—in fact, one would increase their efforts! Therefore he comes with arguments from the opposite extreme—those you wrote in your letter.

I have already written similarly to others who asked: just as receiving the Torah generally was only through first saying "Na'aseh" before "Nishma" (we will do before we will hear), so too with learning Pnimiyus HaTorah—and even more so—as brought in Kuntres Limud HaChassidus by my father-in-law, the previous Rebbe zatzal.

In these days before our festival of joy (in plural), may it be G‑d's will that joy be drawn down for you and your bride-to-be according to the principle that joy breaks all boundaries; may concealments and obstacles diminish in your matters, and through expanded consciousness and joy may you build a Jewish home—a Chassidic home—in Israel.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that excuses for avoiding Chasidus study stem from the Yetzer Hara. By prioritizing what truly matters, acting with love toward others—especially family—and embracing joy, we can overcome obstacles and build strong Chassidic homes.
