Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 4th of Elul, in which you write about your wife's health situation—may she live—and that the doctors have expressed their opinion that she should avoid pregnancy. Even though they permitted you to use methods to prevent this, you chose to act with abstention, especially since your wife forgave you for this, and you ask my opinion on the matter.
In general, I am not pleased with such stringencies—meaning to act with abstention—for in our generation only rare individuals are able to guard themselves from improper thoughts and even more so from anything beyond that. Who can say that Torah study will be with purity and prayer as well? Therefore, in the vast majority of cases, the gain is outweighed by the loss. Especially since the tzt"z permitted in such cases to use a cloth (see his responsa Even HaEzer section 89).
Additionally, regarding all of the above, even if a wife forgives matters like these there is debate whether such forgiveness is valid. Furthermore, in many cases lack of marital relations affects a woman's health.
As you requested, I will mention you and your family at the holy resting place of my father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal for improvement in both physical and spiritual health. Certainly you also have regular study sessions in Chassidus—which is called in the holy Zohar "the tree of life and soul of Torah." May Hashem grant you success to share good news in all of the above.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that abstaining from marital relations for health-related pregnancy prevention is not advisable due to potential spiritual risks and possible harm to marital harmony or health; instead, halachically permitted methods should be used and one should strengthen Torah study.
