Davening Slowly, Reflecting on Chassidus, and Improving Character Traits

The Rebbe writes that even if davening at length with reflection on chassidic teachings seems not to affect one's character traits, one should continue. He advises checking tefillin, giving daily charity before prayer, and reciting Tehillim after prayer to see improvement.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 5th of Elul in which you ask whether to continue your practice of sometimes davening at length and reflecting on a concept from Chassidus, but it seems to you that it does not affect your character traits—and therefore your question is whether to continue this practice.

The question is surprising: for if when you act as described above it still does not affect your character traits, one can imagine what would happen if you were to abandon this path—as is evident from daily experience.

It is also understood with simple logic that lengthy prayer and contemplation on a concept from Toras Chaim help improve one's character traits and ultimately lead not only to iskafya (subduing) but even to is'hapcha (transformation).

He should also check his tefillin and give some coins to charity every weekday before prayer. After prayer, he should recite the daily portion of Tehillim as divided for the days of the month. Surely then he will also see with his physical eyes the effect of this work on his character traits.

Regarding your notification about setting the date for your wedding with your bride—may she live... May it be the will of Hashem that you live for good fortune and success and build a Jewish home in Israel—an everlasting edifice upon the foundations of Torah and mitzvah as they are illuminated by the light within Torah; this is the teaching of Chassidus.

With blessings of mazal tov, mazal tov and for a good inscription and sealing.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that persistent davening with reflection on Chassidus refines one’s character over time. Practical steps like checking tefillin, giving charity before prayer, and saying Tehillim after help bring visible improvement in middos.
