Serve Hashem by Challenging Your Animal Soul, Not Your Body

The Rebbe writes that serving Hashem should focus on challenging the animal soul, not weakening the body. Proper spiritual work can be done without harming one's health, and a balanced approach leads to order and success in both prayer and mitzvos.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the beginning of the month, regarding what you wrote about your health and also about weakness in your spiritual work: I have already written to you several times—and it has surely become known—that the intention in serving Hashem is not to afflict the body (except in rare cases), but rather to challenge the animal soul. In our generation, when one afflicts the body it becomes weakened, which then disturbs intellectual perception and emotional feeling. This is in addition to what is explained at length in the discourse "Basi L'Gani" 5713 on this topic; further elaboration is unnecessary.

There is enough time during the day for lengthy prayer, proper study—both revealed and hidden Torah—and meticulous mitzvah observance. All of this can be accomplished without harming bodily health: eating, drinking, sleeping, etc., as required for each individual (since not everyone is alike in this). Therefore there is no reason to complain or seek far-fetched excuses. When all of this is done in an orderly manner, everything will be organized...

With blessings for a good inscription and sealing,

In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Mazkir

Summary
