Letting Go of Bad Conduct and Engraving Change in Heart and Mind

The Rebbe writes that true change begins with a firm decision to abandon negative behaviors, not only intellectually but also emotionally. He advises increasing Torah study and prayer, memorizing sections by heart, and emphasizes that light dispels darkness.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your question from some time ago regarding rectification. It is well known that the beginning of the work is a firm decision to abandon the negative behaviors up until now and to engrave this in one's mind and heart—that is, it should affect one's feelings and not just understanding.

The contemplation here is simple: consider the damage and destruction these behaviors cause both in physical life and certainly in spiritual life, as explained in books—both general works of Mussar and Chassidus.

For rectifying the past, one should increase in letters of Torah and prayer; that is, pray the entire prayer without relying on permissions to skip parts (and one can arrive at the start of prayer or even earlier so there is no need for such permissions). Regarding Torah, this means literally learning—and also having at least some chapters of Mishnayos and Tanya memorized by heart to review while walking along the way, etc. It is also worthwhile to know by heart the maamar "VeHadarta Pnei Zaken" from the end of Parshas Kedoshim in Likkutei Torah. Since light dispels darkness, maintaining memory of words of Torah and prayer will gradually drive away opposite thoughts.

Certainly you have a fixed schedule for studying Chassidus and recite each day after prayer the daily portion of Tehillim—as divided for the days of the month—and may Hashem grant you success.

With blessings for a good inscription and sealing, on behalf of the Rebbe shlita.

Summary

True change starts with a heartfelt commitment to leave behind negative habits. The Rebbe teaches that immersing oneself in Torah study, prayer, and internalizing their words helps transform both mind and heart—gradually replacing negativity with spiritual light.
