Shalom u'Vrachah!
I have received an inquiry in your name from Haraha"ch vavac"h iy"a nu"n ossek b'tzt"z rav pe'alim u'ba'al middos Moreinu Harav Shalom Dovber Gordon regarding your daughter who became engaged and now is distancing herself, saying that her feelings have not yet crystallized, and you ask whether you should pressure her.
In my opinion, it would be more diplomatic and also easier to influence your daughter if you would ask one of her friends to speak with her about this matter, and you yourself should only do so from time to time so that your daughter does not get the impression that you want to boss her around.
I think the reason your daughter's feelings about this matter have changed is because they behaved in a way not permitted for Jews before marriage, which has now brought about the opposite result—that she is distancing herself from him. If mothers and parents in general would take an interest in their children's upbringing while they are still young according to what the holy Torah requires, much anguish and trouble would be avoided for themselves and even more so for their children.
It goes without saying that I write this not to hurt you but to draw attention that at least from now on and further—just as you are pressing your daughter regarding this shidduch in general—you should also influence her even more so that she should accept upon herself that when she marries she will run a Jewish home as a Jewish daughter should: with taharas hamishpachah (family purity), a kosher kitchen, observing Shabbos, etc. Only with such conduct can there be true Jewish happiness. May Hashem help you begin acting appropriately in this matter soon and repeatedly, for then ultimately results will come and you will be able to report good news in all the above-mentioned matters.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that sensitive family matters are best addressed through gentle influence rather than pressure. He stresses the importance of Torah-based upbringing from an early age and encourages fostering commitment to Jewish values in marriage.
