The Importance of Promptness in Fulfilling Pledges

ב"ה, כ"ד תמוז, תשי"ד ברוקלין.
The Rebbe explains that the true merit of Avraham's binding of Yitzchak was his eagerness and speed, teaching that pledges—especially tzedakah—should be fulfilled promptly and with joy. Delaying fulfillment, even for practical reasons, is discouraged.

B"H, 24 Tammuz, 5714.

Brooklyn.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter from the 20th of Tammuz with the enclosure. You do not need to worry about who opens letters addressed to me—I open them myself, and obviously if the writer wishes that only I see it, that is what happens. This is also true regarding your letter; you can be completely confident and at ease.

Regarding what you wrote about our discussion here to give a certain sum to the yeshivos: you write that you do not yet know when, as you are waiting for a response about your application. Hopefully by now my letter to your wife has arrived. As for connecting this matter to your application, I believe I pointed out in our conversation that these should not be tied together; at most only the money from the application should depend on it, but the rest should have been given as soon as possible.

According to the instruction of Rabbeinu HaZaken in Igeres HaKodesh section 21, where he writes approximately as follows: The reason the Akeidah (binding of Yitzchak) is constantly mentioned as a basis for Hashem granting all Jews their needs—and we recite Parshas HaAkeidah every day before davening, and before and after it we pray that Hashem act with us in kindness and mercy in its merit; and Parshas HaAkeidah is also one of the blessings and requests in Musaf on Rosh Hashanah; and it is read on Rosh Hashanah—the Alter Rebbe explains in Igeres HaKodesh that the novelty here is not just the Akeidah itself (for Avraham Avinu it was not so much a test), but rather that Avraham did it with alacrity—hurrying—to show his desire to fulfill Hashem's will with joy. The merit of this haste protects and stands by Jews in all generations, as Rabbeinu HaZaken says: 'for us and our children forever.' Rabbeinu HaZaken further adds: 'and especially this applies to acts of tzedakah—to do them as early as possible.'

Certainly when writing to a Chabad chossid there is no need to bring proofs to reinforce Rabbeinu HaZaken's words. Therefore, I am sure that after looking into this mentioned Igeres HaKodesh you will hasten regarding the matter we discussed. As Rabbeinu HaZaken—the Baal HaTanya (the halachic authority in hidden Torah) and Shulchan Aruch (the halachic authority in revealed Torah)—says: 'as soon as possible.' May Hashem help—and He will help—that you do this with joy and willingness to fulfill your Creator's will and bring satisfaction to your Maker. This merit will stand by you also in this world—as the Alter Rebbe writes there—for you, your wife, and all yours for long good years.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that fulfilling pledges—especially tzedakah—should be done promptly and with enthusiasm, following Avraham's example at the Akeidah. Acting quickly brings blessing both spiritually and materially.
