Maintaining Health and Personal Routines for Torah Study

The Rebbe writes about the importance of maintaining one's health by keeping proper routines for eating, drinking, and sleeping according to individual needs. This care is essential for effective Torah study and mitzvah observance, as one mitzvah should not contradict another.

B"H, 9 Sivan, 5714. Brooklyn.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

With astonishment I learned that you are not careful with your health, which is contrary to what is explained in Chassidus in several places and also quoted in the Maamar of Yud Shevat 5713 about how one must be careful in this matter. It is already known the ruling of the Rambam that this is among the ways of Hashem. It is understood that this does not contradict keeping the schedule of the yeshivah and additional fixed times for Torah and prayer, etc., because it is impossible for one mitzvah to contradict another mitzvah.

This is especially true for a student of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim, which was founded and is run by our holy Rebbeim, upon whom rests the responsibility to keep the yeshivah's schedule and also to guard his body and soul so they remain healthy and whole, enabling him to serve Hashem without distractions.

Therefore, at least from now on you should keep proper routines for eating, drinking, and sleeping as required by your body's structure—since not everyone is the same in this regard. Through such care and caution you will also gain greater understanding and absorption in your studies and fulfillment of mitzvos. It is already known the ruling of our Sages: "Yagata u'Matzasa" (You have toiled and you have found).

I await good news regarding all the above, in the name of our Rebbe shlita.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that caring for one's health through proper routines enables better Torah study and mitzvah observance. Each person must tailor their habits to their own needs so that physical well-being supports spiritual growth.
