Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive your letter from Rosh Chodesh Sivan, in which you write about your activities among the shovavim who are gradually advancing in the study of Chassidus, its guidance and customs. Certainly, if you continue in this with pleasantness and peaceful ways—which are the ways of Torah—you will be even more successful.

The same applies to what you write about farbrengens; it is appropriate to read sichos at gatherings of the Nshei U'Bnos Chabad organization. Although reading secular books is damaging and harmful, it is known that in general one must proceed from the easier to the more difficult—especially regarding outreach among women. As our Sages said regarding Matan Torah (and as Rashi explains), "Ko tomar l'veis Yaakov" (Thus you shall say to the house of Yaakov), meaning that women require a gentle approach. Similarly here, there should be greater emphasis on increasing positive action—such as reading sichos—so that over time the ruling will be fulfilled: "A little light dispels much darkness," and certainly much light dispels even more darkness.

It is understood that my intention is not to give approval for reading secular books; rather, for now the emphasis should be on positive action.

At an auspicious time I will mention all those whose names you wrote when I am at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal. May Hashem grant them success to go from strength to strength.

You write that you are learning Tanya with young boys; surely next time you will let me know whether they are from within the yeshiva or from outside. May Hashem grant you success in all of the above.

As we approach Shavuos—the time of the giving and receiving of our Torah—I hereby express my blessing in the wording of my father-in-law, the Rebbe: to receive the Torah with joy and inwardness.
