Shalom u'Vrachah!
I was startled to receive your letter from Tuesday regarding fasting on Shabbat for a yahrzeit. There are several opinions on this matter, but according to all views, one does not fast on Shabbat itself. In my opinion, it is preferable to move the fast forward to Friday; if that is not possible, postpone it to Sunday or do not fast at all.
See the various opinions in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 568:9 and in the later authorities there: Turei Zahav 529:3, in our Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch there 568:9, and in the books cited in Sdei Chemed Asifat Dinim Hilchot Aveilut 96, and in Sefer Kol Bo by Rabbi Grunwald page 390. In my opinion, even a formal annulment of a vow does not apply here. In any case, do not fast on Shabbat.
With blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that fasting for a yahrzeit should never be done on Shabbat; instead, one should advance it to Friday or postpone it to Sunday if needed. He provides sources for further study and emphasizes that no vow annulment is required in this context.
