במענה על מכתבה מז' אייר, בו כותבת אשר בתור מורה של בית יעקב, רוצה לדעת, אם נכונה השמועה אשר התירו לימוד הגמרא לבנות, אבל אינה מפרטת, איזה גמרא ובאיזה אופן.
הנה אופני הלימוד הנחוצים, וזה תלוי באופי של התלמידות, כשרונותיהן וידיעותיהן, והיסודות לקבוע פרטים בזה, הוא על פי המבואר בהלכות תלמוד תורה, ביורה דעה סימן רמ"ז סעיף ג', והנושאי כלים שם. אשר תמצית והמסקנא אחרונה תמצא בהלכות תלמוד תורה לרבינו הזקן בעל השולחן ערוך סוף פרק א', וזה לשונו: "גם הנשים חייבות ללמוד הלכות הצריכות להן לידע אותן כמו דיני נדה וטבילה ומליחה ואיסור יחוד וכיוצא בהם כל מצות עשה שאין הזמן גרמא וכל מצות לא תעשה של תורה ושל דברי סופרים מוזהרות בהן כאנשים".
נוסף על זה, בימינו כאשר נתרופפו בדעת ההמון ובפרט הנוער, יסודי הדת, ונכנסה בהם כבר הערמומיות מחוץ, הנה מוכרח הלימוד בפרט לנערות, שבמשך שנים אחדות הרי בהן תהי' תלוי' כל הנהגת הבית להודיען את היופי שבתורה ולהכירן עם השקפת תורתנו הק' על אותן הבעיות שעמהן נפגשות בחיי היום יומים בתור אשה לבעלה ובתור אם לבני', וכאשר הוכיח הנסיון של שנים האחרונות עד כמה נחוצות ידיעות אלו.
ובהתאם לזה, הנה בשנים האחרונות אי אפשר בלאו הכי שגם הנערות תהי' להם עכ"פ ידיעה מהראשי פרקים דתורת החסידות המביאה להרגשה פנימית יותר בהענינים דבין אדם למקום אהבת השם ויראתו ואהבת ישראל ואהבת התורה כו'. ואם נחוצים ידיעות אלו לאנשים ונשים פרטים, הרי על אחת כמה וכמה גדולה נחיצותן לאלו המתעסקים בחינוך שיש להם השפעה מיוחדה על הדור הצעיר, ובמילא הרי אפילו שגיאה קלה ונטי' קלושה מדרך הישר של המורה והמחנך, עלולה להביא היזק רב לכל המחונכים שלו, והאריכות בזה אך למותר.
לפלא שאינה מזכרת במכתבה יותר פרטים אודות עבודתה בתור מורה וכן אודות התלמידות בהסביבה בה נמצאת.

In response to your letter from 7 Iyar, in which you write that as a teacher in Beis Yaakov you wish to know if the rumor is true that permission has been given to teach Gemara to girls, but you do not specify which Gemara or in what manner.
The necessary methods of study depend on the nature of the students, their talents and knowledge. The foundation for determining details in this matter is based on what is explained in Hilchos Talmud Torah, Yoreh De'ah siman 247:3 and its commentaries. The summary and final conclusion can be found in Hilchos Talmud Torah by our master the Alter Rebbe at the end of chapter one: "Women are also obligated to learn those laws they need to know, such as the laws of niddah, immersion, salting meat, prohibition of seclusion, and similar matters; all positive commandments not time-bound and all prohibitions of Torah and rabbinic origin—they are warned about them just like men."
Additionally, nowadays when the foundations of faith have weakened among the masses—especially youth—and outside cunning has already entered them, it is essential for girls in particular (who within a few years will be responsible for running a household) to be taught the beauty of Torah and introduced to our holy Torah's perspective on issues they encounter daily as wives and mothers. Experience from recent years has shown how necessary this knowledge is.
Accordingly, in recent years it has become unavoidable that even girls must at least have some knowledge of the main points of Chassidus, which brings a deeper internal feeling regarding matters between man and G‑d: love and awe of Hashem, Ahavas Yisrael (love for fellow Jews), love for Torah, etc.
If such knowledge is necessary for individuals—men and women—how much more so for those involved in education who have special influence over the younger generation. Even a slight error or deviation from the straight path by a teacher or educator can cause great harm to all their students; elaboration on this is unnecessary.
It is surprising that you did not mention more details about your work as a teacher or about your students and their environment in your letter.
