Charity, Trust in G-d, and the Path to Abundant Blessings

Yitzchak HaKohen Katz — Yitzchak HaKohen Katz
The Rebbe writes about two approaches to giving charity: giving according to one's means or giving beyond one's means with trust that G-d will repay abundantly. He encourages the recipient to be generous, especially in Elul, and assures that such generosity brings unlimited blessings.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Rosh Chodesh Elul, with its enclosure, I am attaching here a receipt for the check for printing the booklet for the upcoming Rosh Hashanah.

One mitzvah brings another mitzvah in its wake; may you continue to grow in acts of charity according to your current ability—and even more so. For with the Aibershter (the Almighty), there are two ways: one way is that first a person gives money and then sees how much is left for charity proportionally; another way is to give more than one can afford to charity, and the Aibershter does not remain indebted—He then provides accordingly: if one gave maaser (a tenth), He gives back calculated portions; if one gave chomesh (a fifth), He gives back even more. Thus, for every extra dollar given—beyond what seems possible—the Aibershter gives not only that dollar but several more, as is well known from many sefarim.

Therefore, reading in your letter that you do not want to miss the opportunity to give some charity—especially in Elul—and seeing the amount of your check, I wonder why you have mercy on the Aibershter? Why are you concerned that your check should be such that the Aibershter would give you income and livelihood far beyond what you estimated yourself by this check's charity?

I hope you will not take offense at my words and will also remember that the Rebbe always wanted you to become a wealthy man—one of the ways is 'Aser te'aser' (You shall surely tithe)—to give charity as the Rebbe wished. And if one does not bargain over this, neither does the Aibershter bargain—as explained in Iggeres HaKodesh siman 13: even someone who spends a chomesh is still within limitation and measure in serving Hashem; but one who serves with chesed and expansiveness (especially relevant to Kohanim—for a Kohen is a man of kindness), then nothing restrains his generous spirit—whether in charity or Torah study. The Alter Rebbe concludes there that then the Aibershter also acts toward him with His great kindness—without limit or end.

I would be happy to hear good news about what is happening in our camp generally and also about your brothers. I hope to hear from you that there is success noticeable in your business. I am also interested to know what is happening regarding your case and the proposal about a building.

With blessings for a good inscription and sealing [in the Book of Life], awaiting good news,

Summary
