מה ששואל במה שנותנים לי פדיונות להקרא על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ, הנה א) שאלה זו צריך לשאול אצל הנותנים ולא אצלי. ב) קרה זה גם בחיי כ"ק מו"ח בעלמא דין, שהיו מוסרים על ידי פדיונות אליו. ג) במה שמקשה שעי"ז הנני פוטר את הנותן מהרהורי תשובה ומשפיכת דמעות, הנה לא עלה זה בדעתי, ולפעמים הנני מפרש זה בביאור להנותן. ולפעמים הנני מקשר זה הקריאה עם הבטחת הנותן לאיזה ענין של תורה ומצוה מצד הנותן. ות"ל אשר כבר ראיתי פירות בפועל מכמה וכמה שקיימו ומקיימים הבטחתם.
... בכל מכתביו שכותב לא ראיתי שמזכיר במה שמתעסק בהשפעה על אחרים לקרבם לתורת הדא"ח ולהתקשרות עם נשיאנו הוא כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ. משל למה הדבר דומה למלך שהטיל על שכם אחד מעבדיו תפקיד מיוחד, והלז מתעסק בתפקיד אחר, אשר מפני זה בטח ממעט מזמנו ומשימת לבו למילוי התפקיד שהטיל עליו המלך.
כ"ק אדמו"ר (מהורש"ב) נ"ע אמר שהתמימים הם נרות להאיר, ז. א. אשר תפקידם המיוחד שהטיל עליהם רבם (שגם על פי נגלה כל המלמד את בן חברו תורה מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו ילדו, ובפרט בחסיד ורבי שהוא לא כאילו ב"כ" הדמיון, אלא ילדו ממש, והרבי אמר שילידיו צריך להיות נר להאיר). אפן פשוטן לשון גערעדט, אז אין דעם ארט וואו ער געפינט זיך דארף ער זען, אז עס זאל ווערן ליכטיק, כי זהו כל מהות ותפקיד נשמתו שבשבילו ירדה מאיגרא רמה לבירא עמיקא...
אין... געפינען זיך טויזנטער אידן וואס ווייסן ניט וועגן חסידות אדער וועגן דעם רבי'ן, און די וואס ווייסן, ווייסן אויך ניט ווי מ'דארף וויסן. און א איד פון די עלטערע תמימים וואס האט כמה וכמה סיפורים בקבלה און ענינים אין חסידות געפינט זיך אין זייערע ד' אמות און טראכט זיך מה לי ולהם. אי, דער רבי נ"ע האט געזאגט, אז ער דארף זיין א נר להאיר, וועט ער דאס אפלייגן אויף אן אנדער מאל.
יעצט איז דאך חודש אלול, און אזוי ווי בכל השנה האב איך ניט ליב צו פרעגן קשיות, על אחת כמה וכמה וויל איך ניט מאריך זיין יעצט אין חודש אלול.
אף על פי כן, וואלט איך מציע געווען, אחר בקשת סליחתו, איר זאלט מאכן פאר זיך א קביעות בכל יום בתורת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ, און א קביעות איזה פעמים בשבוע צו לערנען מיט אנדערע בזה, און זאלט זוכן וועגן בהשתדלות הראוי' אף מקרב זיין אידן לתורה ולמצוות בכלל און צו תורת החסידות דכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ בפרט. און אויב איר וועט זיך דערמיט מתעסק זיין, רעכן אי[ך] אז דער רבי וועט אייך העלפן, אז איר וועט... מצליח זיין אויסצופירן דעם רבינ'ס הוא כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ רצון.

What you ask regarding people giving me pidyonos to be read at the Tziyun of my father-in-law, the Rebbe hk"m: a) This question should be asked of those who give them, not me. b) This also happened during my father-in-law's lifetime in this world—people would give pidyonos through others to him. c) Regarding your concern that by doing so I exempt the giver from thoughts of teshuvah and shedding tears—this never occurred to me. Sometimes I explicitly explain this to the giver. Sometimes I connect this reading with a commitment from the giver regarding some matter of Torah and mitzvah. Thank G‑d, I have already seen actual fruits from many who have fulfilled their commitments.
In all your letters I have not seen you mention your involvement in influencing others—to bring them closer to the teachings of Chassidus and connection with our leader, my father-in-law, the Rebbe hk"m. To what is this comparable? To a king who assigns a special task to one of his servants, but that servant engages in another task—certainly reducing his time and attention for fulfilling what the king assigned him.
My grandfather, the Rebbe (Rashab) n"a said that temimim are "candles to illuminate." That is—their special mission given by their Rebbe (and even according to Nigleh: anyone who teaches another's child Torah is considered as if he gave birth to him; all the more so with a chassid and his Rebbe—it is not just "as if," but truly his child. And the Rebbe said his children must be candles to illuminate). In plain language: wherever he finds himself he must ensure it becomes illuminated—for this is the very essence and mission of his soul for which it descended from a great height to a deep pit.
There are thousands of Jews who do not know about Chassidus or about the Rebbe; even those who do know do not know as they should. And an elder tomim who knows many stories by tradition and matters in Chassidus sits within his own four cubits thinking: What do I have to do with them? But—the Rebbe n"a said he must be a candle to illuminate—he will postpone it for another time. Now it is Elul—and just as throughout the year I do not like asking difficult questions, all the more so I do not wish to elaborate now in Elul.
Nevertheless, I would suggest—with apologies—that you establish for yourself a daily study session in my father-in-law's Torah teachings hk"m; also set times during the week to learn these with others; and seek out opportunities with proper effort—even bringing Jews closer in general to Torah and mitzvos, and specifically to Chassidus as taught by my father-in-law hk"m. If you engage in this work, I believe that the Rebbe will help you succeed in fulfilling his will.
