self respect
business
PhD
.
באם,
ח"ו

Shalom u'Vrachah!
In order to succeed in any matter, one needs self-respect, as well as respect from those whose help is necessary for success. This is especially true in the world of business, where a person's character is most significant. Everyone knows that he is currently studying for his PhD. If, G‑d forbid, he were to leave his studies now, it would be interpreted by various people (who would also tell this to his father-in-law and wife, etc.) that he lacks the drive to persevere in matters that require effort; he starts but does not finish. He would not be embarrassed that everyone would know until now that he lacks self-respect, and since he found an excuse—to enter his father-in-law's business—he abandoned everything just to avoid the aforementioned effort.
Therefore, it is essential that he continue his studies until he receives the PhD. Afterwards—if he wishes to enter his father-in-law's business—he can discuss it then with his father-in-law.
To come here to speak with me about this now is pointless: 1) There is no benefit because my opinion on this matter is clear as above. 2) There is a concern for harm—because it is better that he decides this on his own rather than people saying that he wanted to quit midway but I pressured him not to do so. And this is obvious.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that perseverance and completing one's commitments are vital for self-respect and reputation. One should not abandon important goals for convenience or external pressures; finishing what you start builds lasting character and trust.
