Shalom u'Vrachah!
Your book "Torah Lishmah" has just arrived together with your letter. Thank you for your attention in sending me a copy of your work and for dedicating your time to do so. Naturally, this subject interests me in general—how much more so given that your book discusses topics that were at the center of the polemic between the Misnagdim and Chassidim during that period.
However, I have not yet had the opportunity to read your book with the necessary attention. But in my general overview I noticed that it seems you did not bring up—or at least did not emphasize—the highly significant fact that the Alter Rebbe himself published only two books during his lifetime: Sefer Hilchot Talmud Torah and Sefer HaTanya. Of these two books, Hilchot Talmud Torah was published three years before Tanya. Although Hilchot Talmud Torah was first published anonymously, certainly the Chassidim knew who its author was and therefore drew conclusions from this regarding the emphasis on Torah study. Shortly thereafter, the author became known in wider circles as well.
As for the great value of Torah study—including Torah study for its own sake—this was highlighted emphatically and forcefully throughout all of the Alter Rebbe's teachings.
I do not know if you have a recent edition of Sefer Hilchot Talmud Torah by our Rebbe (the Alter Rebbe), with additions and so forth; my request is to send it to him.
Since I have heard from others that you have additional books, I hope you will follow the custom of many authors to send their works to my library for the benefit of the public—especially since from excerpts I have received it appears that an important part of your books addresses contemporary issues and our generation in general, and especially concerns practical mitzvah observance—for action is what counts most.
With honor and blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe highlights both intellectual engagement with Torah and its practical application through mitzvot. He encourages sharing scholarly works for communal benefit and underscores that action is ultimately paramount.
