Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter... As we stand in the month of Elul, a month that is a time for teshuvah and atonement for anyone who has erred or sinned during the year—if he repents now he will be accepted. In this month it is said: Karov Hashem lechol korav ("G‑d is close to all who call upon Him"), and together with this—it is a month where there is a parable: The king before coming to the city is met by its people who greet him in the field; then anyone who wishes can go out to greet him and he receives everyone with a pleasant countenance and shows a smiling face to all. This also expresses itself in the blowing of the shofar, which is unique to this month—every day (except Shabbat and Erev Rosh Hashanah for specific reasons) we blow shofar as it says: Ala Elokim biteruah ("G‑d ascends with a blast") and Im yitaka shofar ba'ir ("If a shofar is blown in a city"). Its purpose is to awaken to teshuvah and also—this is what is done when crowning a king. In both cases it is a loud sound heard by and awakening every individual without distinction of status or situation—even those who are asleep or dozing. As it says: Kol yoshvei tevel veshocheinei eretz... k'tekoa shofar tishma'u ("All inhabitants of the world and dwellers on earth... when a shofar is sounded you will hear"). May it be that everyone truly goes out (mainly—to go beyond one's natural limitations and traits) to greet the King; may he reveal his hidden love within himself; may Hashem shine His face upon him; may His presence rest and be revealed through involvement with Torah and mitzvos—especially tzedakah and acts of kindness; may he raise his voice like a shofar to awaken those who are sleeping so that they too will do likewise. As it says: Agid zeroecha ledor lechol yavo gevuratecha utzidkatcha... asher asita gedolot... ("I will declare Your arm to each generation, Your might and righteousness... You have done great things..."). And may the King receive us with a pleasant countenance and fulfill our prayer: Teka b'shofar gadol l'cheiruteinu v'sa nes lekabetz galiyoteinu v'kabtzeinu yachad... ("Blow the great shofar for our freedom, raise a banner to gather our exiles, gather us together...") with the true and complete redemption through Moshiach very soon.

*** The additions (in different ink) at the beginning and end of the tena'im document are themselves part of its sanctity regarding tzt"z—and it would be worthwhile to correct your writing accordingly.

*** I acknowledge receipt of your letters (17 Tammuz etc.). Surely you already know how students spent their vacation? It is understandable that the departure of those from Georgia was distressing. And easy.

*** I acknowledge receipt of your letters etc., and their content should be read regarding tzt"z—and you should add regarding what was delayed in them as well.

With blessings for success with increase—and with health and joy—and with blessings for being inscribed and sealed for good.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that Elul offers every Jew direct access to G‑d's closeness—like greeting a king in an open field—and that hearing or sounding the shofar awakens even those spiritually asleep. This prepares us all for redemption through sincere teshuvah.
