Shalom u'Vrachah!
I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 7th of Nissan regarding the Avrech... It appears that there are some unclear details in this matter. The main question was that since according to the law he is exempt from military service, and his only concern is livelihood, the consideration was—as I recall—that if he joins the IDF as a civilian he will be able to be home with his family on Shabbat, which would not be the case if he joins as a soldier. Based on my knowledge of him and his family members, my opinion was that being with his family on Shabbat is more important than financial gain.
On the other hand, if his material situation is such that financial gain outweighs this consideration, then he must weigh the pros and cons and decide for himself what is most necessary for him. Since everything is by Divine Providence—including your letter—I wish to express my personal satisfaction in reading your letter in which you, as his commander, commit not to cause him to desecrate Shabbat or Yom Tov; on the contrary, etc. Although I had assumed this from the outset—especially based on my conversation with the Chief Rabbi of the IDF, Rabbi M. Piron (when he honored me with his visit here)—it is clear that receiving such a commitment directly from the commander himself, filled with sincerity and heartfelt emotion, brings special satisfaction.
May it be G‑d's will that it be fulfilled for you and your colleagues within all of the IDF—the promise of our holy Torah of truth: 'Hashem Elokecha Mithalech Bekerev Machanecha Vehaya Machanecha Kadosh' ("The L‑rd your G‑d walks in the midst of your camp and your camp shall be holy"), and soon may we merit fulfillment of the prophecy: 'Venatati Shalom BaAretz U'Shechavtem Ve'ein Macharid... VeCherev Lo Ta'avor BeArtzechem' ("I will grant peace in the land and you will lie down with none to frighten you... and a sword will not pass through your land").
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that spiritual priorities—such as observing Shabbat with one's family—should generally take precedence over material concerns. However, each individual must carefully weigh their own circumstances. Sincere support for religious observance from leadership brings special satisfaction.
