Shalom u'Vrachah!
Hereby I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 7th of Nissan. I am also enclosing a copy of my letter to Mr. Yosef Zeira, S.L., which speaks for itself.
On this occasion I wish to express again the satisfaction I had from Mr. Yosef Zeira's letter, especially since its content will surely make it easier for you in fulfilling your role as a military rabbi.
As has been discussed on various occasions, it is specifically the military framework that prepares soldiers for precision in observing Torah and its mitzvos; after all, one of the foundations of the army is acceptance of authority and carrying out orders in a manner of 'naaseh kodem lenishma' (we will do before we will hear), while rejecting the approach that personal conduct is a private matter not relevant to others—or to all of Israel—despite our Sages' statement that 'Kol Yisrael areivim zeh bazeh' (all Jews are responsible for one another).
This too is a foundation for maintaining an army: deviation from precisely following the commander's order can endanger not only an individual's position but that of the entire unit or even the whole army—and even the people whom the army protects.
Moreover, the decision in this matter does not belong at all to the one carrying out the order but rather to those who have invested their best efforts, energy, and time in studying military tactics and so forth. The analogy is clear regarding diligent Torah study—about which it is said: 'for it is your wisdom and understanding.'
With honor and blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that military discipline can enhance Torah observance by instilling obedience and collective responsibility—values essential both for soldiers and for every Jew committed to Torah life.
