B"H, the days of Selichos, 5731.
Brooklyn, NY.
To the sons and daughters of Israel wherever they are—may Hashem be upon them for life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In these days, days of preparation for Rosh Hashanah, it is of utmost importance to clearly know the meaning of Rosh Hashanah, which is coming upon us and all Israel for good and blessing. Much can also be learned from those matters which the Torah established should occur before Rosh Hashanah as preparation for it, because Torah is Torah Or—its instructions illuminate and clarify the Jewish path in all its details.
Among the matters directly connected with Rosh Hashanah and serving as preparation for it is the constant practice that before Rosh Hashanah (on the Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah) we read what the Torah says and points out to every Jew: Atem Nitzavim...—the portion of Nitzavim. The portion begins with the explanation: Atem Nitzavim HaYom Kulchem Lifnei Hashem Elokeichem Rosheichem... ad Shoev Meimecha, Le'avrecha Bivris Hashem Elokecha... ("You are standing today, all of you together, before Hashem your G‑d: your heads... until your water drawer, to bring you into the covenant with Hashem your G‑d...").
At first glance there seems to be a contradiction in this explanation: first it says "Nitzavim... Kulchem" (all together, without distinction), and immediately afterward it enumerates the different types (categories) of each individual. And in general, why does the Torah list out all these different levels of Jews from highest to lowest when "Kulchem" already includes everyone?
The answer is that this itself contains a fundamental instruction: there must be both things together—(a) Kulchem—which means united as one, all as one; and (b) at the same time each individual has their own unique task and mission according to their status and situation.
This raises a question: since such differentiation is necessary—and even extreme—from your heads to your water drawer—how is unity achieved at the same time so that it becomes "Kulchem"—as one?
The answer: Atem Nitzavim HaYom Kulchem—Lifnei Hashem Elokeichem. "Nitzavim" is more than just "standing," it means a firm stance with deep awareness that one stands before the Almighty Who is Elokeichem—your strength and entire being—in which all Jews are equal; this makes them all one—Kulchem as one.
This can be understood through a simple analogy: when a group unites to form an association—whether financial enterprise or scientific or another purpose—the members unite for a certain time and goal which requires each one's contribution of money or effort or knowledge in science etc. In all other characteristics each member remains a world unto themselves.
But when Jews unite as Torah demands—Lifnei Hashem Elokeichem—as above—and with the purpose of Le'avrecha Bivris Hashem Elokecha Uva'alaso Asher Hashem Elokecha Koreis Imcha HaYom—to bring you into this covenant and oath which Hashem your G‑d makes with you today—which encompasses one's entire being with all one's faculties (the "Kulchem" within each individual)—this is an eternal and complete unity of Kulchem as one (and this Kulchem—with Hashem Elokeichem).
The Torah further explains: this Kulchem is divided into Rosheichem... ad Shoev Meimecha—and each in their particular characteristic (and special actions) enters into this covenant with Hashem. Every single action by any head as a head or by any water drawer as such—a deed according to Hashem's instructions (in His Torah)—is an expression of this total covenant of Kulchem—with Hashem Elokeichem. Each person has their special Divine mission according to their status and situation. And in this way—as each fulfills their mission—the unity of Klal Yisrael is fulfilled: Kulchem—as one.
This brings us to a point that must again be emphasized at its proper time regarding those who are in the category of Rosheichem (l)Shivteichem—spiritual leaders in their communities or people of influence in their circles—even every individual as head of their family.
It goes without saying that the first duty and task of spiritual leaders—especially during these Days of Awe, days of awakening and soul-accounting—is to strengthen all matters of Torah and mitzvos among those influenced by them—in actual deed—in daily life; and among those who for various reasons are currently distant from Judaism—to awaken within them a feeling of teshuvah, returning to their source, beginning to live as complete Jews with complete Judaism for an entire year.
Unfortunately sometimes this best opportunity of the year is lost through speeches on worldly problems or topics which—even if important—are completely beyond control of speaker or listener; they cannot do anything about them. It is most regrettable when instead of utilizing moments of spiritual Jewish awakening to strengthen Jews in their eternal total covenant with Hashem Elokeichem—and He Himself gave each individually—from Rosheichem down to Shoev Meimecha—a mission—and explain each Jew's duties in daily life—the time and attention are given over to global problems or politics or matters not relevant at all to place or time.
If someone argues that nowadays it's hard for a Jew to maintain complete Judaism without compromise—all year long with one's whole being—the Torah says: Atem Nitzavim HaYom...—you stand firm today etc.—not as a command or promise about the future but as a fact. Jews must know they stand firmly before G‑d Who is their life-force and strength. All that's needed is for each person to bring this out from hiddenness into revelation—from potential into action.
And with this assurance from Nitzavim, Jews—all without exception—from Rosheichem down to Shoev Meimecha—come to crown (so-to-speak) the Almighty during these days of Rosh Hashanah; Umalchuso Birtzon Kibluh Aleihen—they accept His kingship wholeheartedly with greatest enthusiasm—and proclaim Him King over Israel and Redeemer—and King over all earth.
May it be His will that every Jew—man, woman, child—in these coming days be permeated with the spirit of Rosh Hashanah; begin the new year standing firm—with certainty—to fulfill the Divine mission given by G‑d according to one's status; carry it out during Rosh Hashanah, after Rosh Hashanah, throughout every day—the "today," every day—and G‑d will surely fulfill His promise as stated right after: Lema'an Hakim Oscha HaYom Lo Le'Am—to raise you up today (every day) as His people; also per our Sages' interpretation—that just like day starts dark then becomes bright—it will truly become bright for every Jew individually and Klal Yisrael collectively until fulfillment of "Asid LeHa'ir Lachem Or Olam" (the future will shine upon you an everlasting light)—forever—with true complete redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu—as per David's prayer: Elohim LeHatzileni Hashem LeEzrati Chusha (G‑d save me! L‑rd hurry to help me!)—speedily in our days.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while every Jew stands united before Hashem on Rosh Hashanah, each has an individual Divine mission. Spiritual leaders should focus on strengthening Jewish observance rather than worldly issues. Every Jew can reveal inner strength to fulfill G‑d’s will throughout the year.
