בזה הנני לאשר קבלת מכתבו מיום א' דר"ח אייר, ואזכירו על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר למילוי משאלות לבבו לטובה בתוכן מכתבו.
ובודאי לדכוותי' למותר להדגיש גודל האחריות ויחד עם זה גודל הזכות של כל אחד ואחת שיכול להשפיע בסביבתו, ומשני הקצוות: מחד גיסא, על פי

חכמינו ז"ל אשר לב ישראל ער הוא להקב"ה לתורתו ולמצוותיו, וראו זה במוחש בנוגע להנוער ובמדה חשובה גם בנוגע להמבוגרים בבני עמנו, אלא שמצפים ומשתוקקים שיגידו להם דברי אלקים חיים וניכרים דברי אמת (שאמת שוללת פשרות, עסקי חבילות וכיו"ב וד"ל),

היוצאים מן הלב פעם אחר פעם,
וחזקה
לתעמולה זו שאינה חוזרת ריקם.
ולאידך גיסא, חוסר ההשתדלות בדבר זה אין זה רק כפי שהי' באיזה דורות לפנינו, שאז מי שהחמיץ הזדמנות להשפיע גרם שזה שהי' יכול להיות למדן גדול הנה מחוסר ההשתדלות בזה נשאר למדן קטן, ותמורת היותו ירא שמים גדול נשאר ירא שמים פחות. לא כן עכשיו שהשאלה היא פיקוח נפשות ממש, שיהי' יהודי וכו', וכנראה גם זה בחוש.
ואם בכל הדורות ובכל המקומות הנה
ואהבת
לרעך כמוך כלל גדול הוא בתורה, על אחת כמה וכמה במדינות מסויימות, ועל דרך המדינה בה נמצא עתה, ובתקופתנו רבת הבילבולים והמבוכה וטישטוש הערכים, ועד
לקרוא
לאור חושך ולחושך אור, שבהמשך להאמור לעיל רבה האחריות כמה פעמים ככה וביחד עם זה גם הזכות.
וכיון שאין הקב"ה דורש אלא
לפי
כוחם של כאו"א, בודאי ובודאי שנותנים הכוחות מלמעלה למלאות תפקיד האמור, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצון ובהחלטה תקיפה, וללא חת מהמלעיגים ומהדוגלים בשם הפשרות וכו'.

Hereby I acknowledge receipt of your letter from Sunday, the eighth of Iyar, and I will mention you at the resting place of my father-in-law the Rebbe for the fulfillment of your heart's wishes for good as mentioned in your letter.
Certainly for your honor it is unnecessary to emphasize the great responsibility—and at the same time the great privilege—of every individual who can influence his surroundings, from both perspectives: On one hand, as our Sages of blessed memory have stated, the heart of Israel is awake toward the Holy One Blessed Be He, His Torah and His mitzvos. This is clearly seen regarding the youth and to a significant extent also regarding adults among our people; they are waiting and yearning to hear words of the living G‑d, and words of truth are recognizable (for truth rejects compromises, business deals and so forth), especially when spoken sincerely again and again. Such efforts are assured not to return empty-handed.
On the other hand, a lack of effort in this area is not as it was in previous generations—when missing an opportunity to influence meant that someone who could have become a great scholar remained a lesser one or instead of being very G‑d-fearing became less so. Now, however, it is truly a matter of spiritual life and death—whether someone will remain Jewish etc.—and this too is evident.
If in all generations and places "Ve'ahavta l'reiacha kamocha" (You shall love your fellow as yourself) was a great principle in Torah, how much more so in certain countries—such as where you are now—and especially in our era filled with confusion and blurred values, where darkness is called light and light darkness. In such times responsibility increases many times over—and so does privilege.
Since the Holy One Blessed Be He only demands according to each person's ability, certainly strength is given from Above to fulfill this mission; all that is needed is willpower and firm resolve—not fearing mockers or those who advocate compromise etc.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that influencing others positively is both an immense responsibility and privilege. In today's confusing times this duty becomes even more vital; with determination and trust in Divine help one can make a meaningful impact despite challenges.
