מאשר אני קבלת מכתבו מח' חנוכה, בו כותב אודות ביהכ"נ החב"די בצפת ומה שמצא בו ועשה בזה.
ובודאי אין מקום להבעת תודה בזה, כי
שכר
מצוה מצוה, שעצם הענין הוא השכר הכי גדול. אבל רצוני להביע קורת רוחי ונח"ר על פעלו הטוב בהאמור, ובודאי הי' לדוגמא לאחרים שהיו בעת מעשה ולהדרים שם בפרט.
לתועלת הענין, ובראותי התענינות מר בזה, כדאי הי' שיתקשר עם ב"כ ש"ב הרה"ח וכו' הרע"ז שי' סלונים (ירושלים, שיכון חב"ד) אשר בקר כמה פעמים בצפת, וכיליד ירושלים ומנהל כולל חב"ד עמד גם בקשר עם העסקנים בצפת בענין ביהכ"נ הזה. ותודה מראש גם על טרחת מר האמורה.

ההתנגדות
לחסידות וחסידים צירפו גם הטעם לההתנגדות, והוא החשש ששיטת החסידות תביא לקולות בקיום המצוות וכו' ועוד יותר מאשר קולא בעלמא, וכמבואר בהכרוזים

זאת אומרת, אשר בעת מעשה הצהירו שבאם יתברר שהטעם אין לו יסוד וכו' ממילא בטלה ההתנגדות.
ולאחרי שעברו יותר ממאתים שנה, הנה קול המון, אשר

חסיד זה שאינו מסתפק בהנחת זוג אחד של תפילין, אלא מחמיר גם להניח תפילין דר"ת, והוא מאריך בתפלה, ומחמיר בנוגע להוספת שבת, מקפיד בכשרות המאכלים ומדייק בהידור מצוות וכו' וכו'. והמסקנה בנוגע ל"התנגדות" ו"מתנגדים" מובנת.

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the eighth day of Chanukah, in which you write about the Chabad synagogue in Tzfat and what you found there and did regarding it. Certainly there is no place for expressing thanks here, for the reward of a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself—the very act is the greatest reward. However, I wish to express my satisfaction and pleasure at your good actions as mentioned above; surely it served as an example to others who were present at the time and especially to those who reside there.
For the benefit of this matter—and seeing your interest—it would be worthwhile for you to connect with Rabbi Zalman Slonim (Jerusalem, Chabad neighborhood), who has visited Tzfat several times and, as a native of Jerusalem and director of Kollel Chabad, has also been involved with activists in Tzfat regarding this synagogue. Thank you in advance as well for your efforts mentioned above.

In response to the conclusion of your letter regarding encountering opposition from 'misnagdim,' it is certainly known to you that when opposition to Chassidus and chassidim was first publicized, they also stated their reason: a concern that the chassidic approach would lead to leniencies in mitzvah observance—indeed more than just a minor leniency—as explained in proclamations and period literature of that time. That is to say: at that time they declared that if it became clear their reason was unfounded, then automatically their opposition would be nullified. Now after more than two hundred years have passed, one hears everywhere: Who is a chassid if not someone who does not suffice with putting on only one pair of tefillin but is stringent also to put on tefillin d'Rabbeinu Tam; who lengthens his prayers; who is stringent regarding adding to Shabbat; who is careful about kosher food and meticulous about beautifying mitzvos; etc., etc.? The conclusion regarding opposition and opponents is self-evident.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true reward lies within performing mitzvos themselves and highlights how chassidim have become known for their stringency and care in mitzvah observance—contradicting old criticisms. Positive involvement inspires others and strengthens communal bonds.
