I have just received your letter from the 9th of Kislev, a day of good tidings and auspiciousness and a festival of redemption, in which you write about the matter of a memorial book, etc.
You are surely aware of the practice in the house of the Rebbe—meaning what has been established in Lubavitch for many years—that participation in articles and letters and similar items in memorial books is avoided. There are several reasons for this, which are understood, etc.
You have surely noticed that I did not participate even in Sefer HaKen—the memorial book marking 150 years since the passing of Admor HaZaken—and other such cases.
Since on the other hand it is indeed fitting to produce a memorial book if it is properly arranged and adorned as required with words of Torah—both revealed and inner dimensions of Torah—etc., then in such a case, and especially regarding this matter, there are letters connected with the unveiling of the monument for Harav HaGaon and Harav HaChassid Harav Tzadik etc., Rabbi M.Z.L. Etinger. In such a context it is appropriate to include—and certainly in an honorable place—a passage from the memoirs of K.K. Moach Admor who speaks about him and which was printed in Kuntres HaTammim that has just now been reprinted by Kehot.
May it be G‑d's will that you succeed with Hashem's help to fulfill all your heart's desires for good regarding the publication of the memorial book for the Avrech Dov hy"d.—and regarding this it requires consideration whether to add many titles after mentioning hy"d (may Hashem avenge his blood), which indicates he fell sanctifying G‑d's name—especially as you write that many Torah insights in both Nigleh and Chassidus will appear in this book.
