B"H, Days of Chanukah, 5731.

Brooklyn, NY.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter... The matter of Chanukah—the miracle was established with candles. There are two things in a candle and both are called 'candle': the oil and wick with which it is lit, and the vessel that holds the oil and wick. In a wax candle and similar types—the part of the candle that has not yet melted serves as the vessel, or perhaps the vessel is not strictly necessary even ideally.

Our Sages explained: Ner Hashem Nishmat Adam ("The candle of G‑d is the soul of man"), for Ner Mitzvah v'Torah Or ("a mitzvah is a candle and Torah is light"). The wick and oil are (in serving Hashem) the person and the mitzvot; when one lights the candle (which is its purpose and completion), when one does a mitzvah—one ignites that which performs the mitzvah (and together with this act's power—a part of the wick), it becomes light.

There are many kinds of light in a candle; in general—as our Sages say: Nehora Uchma and Nehora Chivra (dark light and bright light). Nehora Uchma is close to the wick—doing a mitzvah in a way where one's own presence is still apparent; Nehora Chivra—doing a mitzvah for its own sake. In Rambam's words: "One who engages in Torah and mitzvot... not for any worldly reason... but does what is true because it is true."

The fulfillment of mitzvot is specifically in this world, where a person must do them and thereby refine his portion in the world for which he was created. This corresponds to the vessel (of the candle). Just as no two people are alike, so too there are many types of vessels—even though generally every Ner Hashem Nishmat Adam (the soul-candle placed in the menorah) is all one piece of gold from its base (the lowest foot) to its flower (the greatest tzaddikim).

May it be G‑d's will that each person will illuminate his or her own candle—their soul: both their Divine soul and animal soul—and their portion in this world, in accordance with Beit Hillel's ruling—to increase continually, adding more light until fulfilling "the night will shine like day."

With blessings for success in spreading the wellsprings.

M. Schneerson

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that every Jew's soul is like a Chanukah candle—its components symbolizing our actions and essence. By performing mitzvot sincerely and continually increasing our spiritual light, we fulfill our unique role in illuminating ourselves and our world.
