B"H, Day of Shalom u'Vrachah! The third day that is doubled with "ki tov," Parshas Korach, 5730.
Brooklyn, NY.
To the students of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch for the siyum celebration, Montreal. May Hashem be upon them and grant them life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to the news about your siyum celebration, may it be at a good and successful time.
According to the well-known teaching of our Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe—author of Tanya (the authority in the inner dimension of Torah) and Shulchan Aruch (the authority in the revealed dimension)—that "one must live with the times," meaning according to the content of the weekly Torah portion, surely your celebration will be illuminated and infused with the light and vitality of this week's parsha. Its central theme is the story of Korach's dispute against Moshe: Moshe is true and his Torah is true.
The matter is—as our Sages testified—that Korach was clever; his arguments were logical and even seemed to have a place within Torah logic. Thus, a miracle was needed—a creation by Hashem—to prove the truth of Torah.
One explanation is based on our Rebbes' account that Korach's initial argument was: "A tallis entirely made of techeiles should be exempt from tzitzis." If so, since all the congregation are holy, there should be no need for Aharon's priesthood. In scriptural language: "Why do you exalt yourselves?"
The core claim regarding a person's service to his Creator—may He be blessed and exalted—is that when holiness surrounds a person like a tallis enveloping one's head and body, that alone suffices; there is no need for tzitzis—the threads attached to the garment's corners—which represent drawing down from what surrounds into one's inner self. Similarly with Aharon's priesthood: since all are holy—even if many hours are spent on earning a livelihood (according to Torah), as it says "And Hashem will bless you in all you do," and afterwards on permissible matters like eating and drinking (also according to Torah), provided all actions are for the sake of Heaven—this should suffice.
Moshe Rabbeinu's response was that influence must also reach one's inner being; there must be a Kohen—and especially a Kohen Gadol—about whom it is said "from the sanctuary he shall not depart," meaning all his affairs are openly holy. On the contrary: only in such a manner does holiness permeate internally—even during hours spent on mundane matters—not only are all deeds for Heaven's sake but even more so: "In all your ways know Him," up to learning Torah and fulfilling mitzvos practically most or all of each day. Then even the tallis possesses holiness, and the sanctity of all Israel is revealed—as explained at length in our Rebbes' discourses.
From this it is understood that there is a sacred task upon every yeshiva student in general—and especially students of Tomchei Temimim—to demonstrate temimus (wholeness) in all matters; a yeshiva student's Torah must be his occupation. Through this added holiness comes blessing upon everyone connected with or supporting the yeshiva—as it says "and its supporters are fortunate"—in addition to each individual's own revealed sanctity.
May it be Hashem's will that every graduate—among all Tomchei Temimim students everywhere—fulfill this task as hoped by our Rebbes who founded the yeshiva; may they bring pride to their parents, teachers (ramim), mashpi'im, and administrators—may they live long.
Increasing excellence in studying both revealed and inner Torah with awe of Heaven—and study leading to practical mitzvah observance—will hasten our exile's end and bring true complete redemption: "Elokim will save Zion... His servants' descendants will inherit it; those who love His Name will dwell therein."
Blessings for success and good news in all mentioned above.
Summary
This letter teaches that true spiritual growth requires not only being surrounded by holiness but also internalizing it through dedicated study and action. Only then does one's personal sanctity become fully revealed and impactful on others as well.
