Counting Sefirah, Stringency, and the Concept of Temimus

ח' תשרי, ה'תש"ל
The Rebbe addresses a question about counting Sefirah and whether stringency is appropriate in this case. He explains that skipping a night or counting twice contradicts the concept of temimus (completeness), and suggests an alternative approach based on one's place of departure.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

It is surprising—the main point is that it seems you did not grasp the issue: this is a question where one cannot simply say 'let us be stringent and satisfy all opinions,' etc. Your suggestion that there should not be a break (i.e., that he should not count for himself—the opposite of the simple meaning) requires clarification in the halachic authorities: how can he skip one night and not count at all (or count twice)? This is not only strange but actually the opposite of the concept of temimus (completeness—not lacking or adding).

Additionally: my explanation can also be expressed differently (not counting for himself—even though this is the foundation—but rather) that he acts according to the place from which he departed, regarding Sefirah and consequently also regarding Kiddush HaChodesh.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that in matters of Sefirah, one cannot simply adopt stringencies to satisfy all opinions if it undermines the principle of temimus—completeness. Instead, one should follow halachic guidance and consider their place of origin when determining practice.
