B"H, the day after the days of redemption, — 12-13 Tammuz, 5729 — Brooklyn, NY.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter... As we come from the days of redemption of our leader and Rebbe, the leader of our generation—which is also the redemption of each one of us within all Israel—every redemption comes after imprisonment and exile. Even more so: it emerges from within imprisonment and exile itself, as our Sages say in such matters: from darkness comes light. And our Sages also say: everything that the Merciful One does is for good. Furthermore—and this is the highest level—the darkness itself is transformed into light, as our Sages put it: this too is for good.
Our Rebbeim explained that this is the order of Divine conduct: kindness, judgment, mercy. Therefore, after an event involving judgment, the attribute of mercy is aroused—which is even greater than the original kindness at first—as is known to be the attribute of Yaakov: an inheritance without boundaries.
May it be G‑d's will that in both material and spiritual abundance together, each one will contemplate how every created being is limited while its soul—which is truly a part of G‑d above—is imprisoned in a body of flesh and blood and in a state of exile within it. Therefore, one should direct all his efforts and desires to bring it out and elevate it from this exile—through teshuvah and good deeds; he should not listen to his evil inclination at all. On the contrary: he should agitate his good inclination against his evil inclination and subdue it until he reaches serving Hashem and loving Him with all his heart—with both inclinations.
When one subdues evil and transforms darkness into light—this connects redemption to redemption: personal redemption to communal redemption—bringing closer the true and complete general redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu. Then "the night will shine like day" (Tehillim 139:12) and "Hashem will be your everlasting light" (Yeshayahu 60:19).
With blessing,
M. Schneersohn
As I have observed—the discussion here with P... etc., regarding matters of Ahavas Chesed (including Bnei Brak)—not only are they lacking understanding, but they do not even listen at all; being preoccupied with their own concerns prevents them from absorbing or even touching upon these matters.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true redemption comes through overcoming adversity by transforming darkness into light. By elevating one's soul through teshuvah and good deeds despite challenges, we hasten both personal growth and collective geulah.
