Shalom u'Vrachah!

Mrs. Geulah Kohen, blessings and peace!

Some time ago I received your letter, and for reasons beyond my control my response was delayed until now. Let us begin with something positive: I had special satisfaction from the news about the Torah study class led by Rabbi Chafer and so on. I hope it is still ongoing even now despite recent events—or perhaps specifically because of them there is a need to increase such classes and similar activities: a class in our Torah (which means instruction), which is a Torah of truth and also a Torah of life—a guide for living—as has been discussed many times. In this too there is a special role for the Jewish woman, as emphasized in this month of Matan Torah according to what our Sages relate: before giving the Torah, the Holy One told Moshe to first speak to the women about accepting the Torah and only afterward to the men. And like all stories from our Sages, this too is an instruction for every Jew everywhere and at all times—the eternal teaching of our Torah for the eternal people of Israel.

I am somewhat surprised at your wonder regarding why certain circles—including myself—do not accept or use the title "Medinat Yisrael" (State of Israel). The reason is clear and simple: The Land of Canaan was given as an inheritance to the people of Israel starting from the Covenant Between the Parts with Avraham Avinu; instead of being called "Land of Canaan," it was established as "Eretz Yisrael," a designation that has lasted thousands of years—in Torah and in common speech from young to old. Such matters are not subject to voting or majority decisions that can change from time to time in unpredictable ways. And after all sorts of recent events—some positive changes but unfortunately also negative ones—even regarding this name change one cannot be certain at all.

But truly there is no need for such concern about not accepting this new title because, as mentioned—in my opinion this is not something subject to voting—just as one cannot vote on what Am Yisrael should be called: whether as it is called in Torah—Am Yisrael—or Canaan etc. The same applies regarding Eretz Yisrael.

If you wish another point here (if any addition were needed): changing this name weakens the claim and ownership of Am Yisrael over Eretz Yisrael—even over those limited areas liberated in 5708—because: (a) A new name gives everything an air of novelty beginning in 5708; thus even our claim and ownership would begin then—or at least have some aspect of novelty—which is contrary to Torah's stance and Rashi's words at the start of his commentary on Torah—and I stress this since our custom for generations has been that a five-year-old begins learning Chumash; meaning Rashi's words are directed at Jews starting from age five—that if nations say to Israel: 'You are robbers who conquered lands belonging to seven nations,' Israel answers: 'All the earth belongs to the Holy One; He gave it to them by His will and took it from them by His will and gave it to us.' Surely you know that this has indeed been claimed by several nations even in our times—and I have found no answer except for this oldest traditional answer from our Sages.

(b) Some interpret "Medinat Yisrael" as part of a general approach or plan "to be like all other nations," an approach which—as Scripture says—has caused many casualties physically and spiritually among Jews—and sadly continues causing destruction among Jewish men and women.

I am further surprised that such a question comes from you—for until now I understood clearly that you are among those who say Eretz Yisrael belongs to Am Yisrael with its borders detailed explicitly in Torah (in Parshat Masei): 'This shall be your land according to its borders all around' etc. Only because of our sins were we exiled from our land—but even during exile it remains ours. The aforementioned title (Medinat Yisrael) allows people to say that parts of Eretz Yisrael are merely territories conquered by Tzahal during the Six-Day War—and any conquest implies taking possession by force from previous owners through one's own power. I do not wish to elaborate on this painful topic or its general cause—the approach "to be like all other nations." Surely there is no need for me to elaborate further since you surely read up until now about these matters in newspapers and books published in Eretz Canaan (according to those authors; some state so openly while others hint at it).

Finally, thank you for giving me satisfaction by raising discussion about increasing birth rates in our holy land (and throughout Jewish communities). I hope you will not limit yourself to discussing it once or twice in print but will continue actively with even greater strength.

May you have good news regarding everything written above as well as your personal matters discussed during your visit here.

With honor and blessing,
M. Schneersohn

P.S.: Enclosed is a copy of my general letter sent to the annual assembly of the women's organization here—which also relates to what was written above.

I am not clear about Mr.'s response regarding what follows below—but I thought that regardless it would be better if he receives directly from me a copy of my letter rather than getting it indirectly—and possibly distorted.

With appreciation, honor, and blessing,
M. Schneersohn
