Shalom u'Vrachah!
To the fourteenth annual convention of Nshei U'Bnos Chabad — may Hashem grant them life — blessings and peace!
Since this year's annual convention is taking place during the days of Erev Rosh Chodesh and Rosh Chodesh Sivan, it is worthwhile to reflect on the meaning of Rosh Chodesh in general, and Rosh Chodesh Sivan in particular, as it relates to the Jewish woman.
In certain respects, Rosh Chodesh has a special significance for women even more than for men; therefore there are special Rosh Chodesh customs for women alone.
Rosh Chodesh Sivan — the day when the Jews arrived at Mount Sinai — highlights in a prominent way the unique spiritual qualities of Jewish women as well as their special merit connected with Kabbalas HaTorah (receiving the Torah), and soon after that also with the first test following Matan Torah (the Giving of the Torah).
As our sages emphasize, Hashem instructed Moshe Rabbeinu to first speak about receiving the Torah with the women and only afterwards with the men. This underscores that women have a special responsibility for upholding Torah and mitzvos. This sense of responsibility was clearly expressed at the first test after Matan Torah, when the women completely stood firm and categorically refused any connection with it — even indirectly by not giving any of their gold jewelry.
Therefore, women merited that Rosh Chodesh brings them a special reward in this world and also a special reward in Olam Haba (the World to Come), as recounted in Pirkei D'Rabbi Eliezer (chapter 45).
In contrast, when it later came to building the Mishkan (Tabernacle), again it was the women who were first to give from their most precious jewelry for the Mishkan.
Thus, both in turning away from evil (sur meira) — distancing oneself from wrongdoing — and in doing good (asei tov), Jewish women have distinguished themselves by their readiness and self-sacrifice.
So too in all times it is expected from women that they be first and serve as an example for men. This also means that Hashem has endowed them with special strengths and qualities to fulfill these expectations.
The auspicious timing of this convention, which is connected with Rosh Chodesh related to Kabbalas HaTorah, will therefore surely arouse and strengthen the appropriate spirit. For all of Torah is divided into these two mentioned aspects: sur meira (turning from evil) and asei tov (doing good), which is also reflected in the content of the first two of the Aseres HaDibros (Ten Commandments) — Anochi (“I am”) and Lo Yihiye Lecha (“You shall have no other gods”) — which Jews heard directly from G‑d.
Therefore it is hoped that each and every participant will be encouraged through this convention to strengthen her activities to spread Yiddishkeit with chassidic vitality and warmth within the framework of Nshei U'Bnos Chabad's program, in an ever-increasing manner.
Blessings for success spiritually and materially, and for good tidings regarding all mentioned above.
Summary
This letter highlights how Jewish women have a unique spiritual role tied especially to Rosh Chodesh Sivan and Kabbalas HaTorah. Their readiness both to turn from negativity and do good serves as an example for all generations, meriting them special blessings.
