ב"ידיעות אחרונות" מערב סוכות, אשר בדרך כלל מתאימים הם לשיחתנו, אף שכמובן אינו ממצה כל השיחה.
ובסגנון הכתוב
כלה קיץ, וסיומו אלול, כלו עשרת ימי תשובה, ונמצאים אנו כבר באמצע זמן שמחתנו, ימי התעוררות בכל שנה ועל אחת כו"כ בשנה זו רבת המאורעות, ועדיין לא באה המלה ולא נאמרו הדברים.
שיטתי – ולדעתי דבר פשוט הוא – שכל הענינים שבתורה כוונתם הוראה והדרכה, שהרי
תורה
מל' הוראה, וכיון
שהתורה נצחית
ובתקפה בכל מקום ובכל זמן, הרי ההוראה היא לכל אחד ואחת גם בדורנו.
והנה תמהתי
מאז מהי ההוראה במאמר חכמינו ז"ל: ארבע רוחות נבראו בעולם . . רוח פינת הצפון בראו ולא גמרו, לפי שאמר כל מי שאומר אני אלו-ה יבוא ויבנה הפינה הזאת שהנחתי (ילקוט שמעוני איוב כ"ו). שלכאורה מי הוא זה שיאמר וכו' וכו'. וגם זה למדתי בקיץ זה,
במאורעות שבאה"ק ת"ו
, אשר לכאורה אין כל ספק ומקום לספק וברור הוא אשר אך ורק
יד ה' עשתה זאת
וכו' ובכל זה לאחרי עבור שעה קלה לפי ערך כבר התחילו לקרר את ההתלהבות ולחזור לפירושים של כוחי ועוצם ידי עשה לי את החיל

, ועד להדפסת החוברת הידועה מטעם הממשלה. ונראה תיכף לעיני כל אשר אף שרק פינה אחת נשארה שלא נגמרה בנצחון הנסיי האמור, כוונתי לזירה הדיפלומטית, הרי משהתחילו בהביאור דכחי ועוצם ידי התחילו להיעמר ולהתוסף קושיים על גבי קושיים ותקלות על גבי תקלות ועד להמצב כהיום הזה, שעלול ח"ו וכו' וכו'. והנה מצאתי פירוש מאמר האמור במאורעות דימים אלו.
ויהי רצון שעל כל פנים עתה לא יבושו מפני האמת, אשר כנ"ל אך ורק יד ה' עשתה זאת, ותוגמר גם פינת צפון על ידי הוי' בטוב ובחסד ובקרוב, ויאמר הוי' די לצרות עמו בני ישראל, הצרות הרוחניות והגשמיות גם יחד, ויגאל כל אחד ואחת מאתנו בתוך כלל ישראל מן הגלות הפנימי ומן הגלות אשר מן החוץ.

I received your letter, and just now I received the article excerpt along with your essay "The Young Generation," etc., and thank you for your attention. Although it is known that I do not grant interviews to journalists, when Mr. Eli Amikam visited me, he used several points from our conversation for his article in Yediot Acharonot on the eve of Sukkot. In general, these align with our conversation, though naturally they do not capture its entirety.
In the style of the verse "the summer is ended," and its conclusion is Elul—all through the Ten Days of Repentance—and now we are already in the midst of our time of joy, days of awakening each year and especially so in this eventful year. Yet still, the word has not been spoken nor have things been said.
My approach—which in my opinion is obvious—is that all matters in Torah are meant as instruction and guidance; after all, Torah means instruction. Since Torah is eternal and valid everywhere and at all times, its guidance applies to every individual even in our generation.
I have long wondered what lesson lies in our Sages' saying: "Four winds were created in the world... The wind of the northern corner was created but not completed because G‑d said: 'Whoever claims to be a deity should come and finish this corner that I left.'" (Yalkut Shimoni Iyov 20:6). Seemingly, who would ever say such a thing?
This too I learned this past summer through recent events which occurred—where there is no doubt or room for doubt; it is clear that only the hand of Hashem accomplished this. Yet even so, after a short time had passed, people began to cool their enthusiasm and revert to explanations like "my strength and the might of my hand made me this success," even to publishing a well-known government pamphlet.
It became immediately apparent to all that although only one corner remained unfinished regarding this miraculous victory—I mean the diplomatic arena—once people began attributing success to their own power and might, difficulties upon difficulties began to arise until reaching today's situation which could lead to further complications.
I have thus found an explanation for our Sages' statement in these recent events. May it be G‑d's will that at least now people will not be ashamed before the truth—that as mentioned above only Hashem's hand accomplished this—and may even the northern corner be completed by Hashem with goodness and kindness soon. May Hashem say "enough" to His people's suffering—both spiritual and physical—and redeem each one of us among all Israel from both inner exile and external exile.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that we must recognize G‑d's hand in miraculous events rather than attributing success to human strength alone. Every aspect of Torah offers guidance for our times; acknowledging Divine intervention leads us toward true redemption.
