Shalom u'Vrachah!
With some delay I received your letter requesting a blessing for one of your congregants, Mr... I will mention him at the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal. May it be G‑d's will that you share good news in this matter.
Especially as we are now in the month of mercy—these auspicious days were beautifully explained by the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, through a parable: Before a king enters his city, its people go out to greet him and receive him in the field. There anyone who wishes may approach him; he welcomes everyone with a pleasant countenance and shows a smiling face to all (Likkutei Torah, Parshas Re'eh p. 32a on "Ani L'Dodi V'Dodi Li," which is an acronym for Elul).
I am aware of our Sephardic brothers' tradition to always set times for studying the inner dimension of Torah in addition to revealed Torah. Surely the community leaders and rabbis continue this tradition—especially nowadays when learning inner Torah is particularly important, as explained at length by Rav Chaim Vital in his introduction to Shaar HaHakdamos of the living Arizal. Our holy Torah as a whole—and especially its inner dimension, called "the soul of Torah" by the Zohar—is truly "the gate of heaven."
With respect and blessings for being inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year.
Summary
The Rebbe encourages maintaining Sephardic traditions of both revealed and inner Torah study during Elul—a time likened to meeting the king in the field—emphasizing that learning inner Torah opens spiritual gates for all.
