Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from 17 Elul, in which you write about the question and answer you received from some in Kfar Chabad. May Hashem Yisbarach, Who watches over each individual with Divine Providence, guide you well in every way.
You write that you are a shamash in the synagogue in the Kfar. You have surely heard the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding the important work of a shamash: "Kra l'shamash v'yizrach or" (Call to the shamash and light will shine), "Al tikrei l'shamash ela l'shamesh" (Do not read it as 'to serve' but as 'the shamash'), meaning that a shamash must illuminate the shul (synagogue) with true light—and also simply that it should be physically bright. As explained in Shulchan Aruch, a synagogue must be well-lit and also clean physically—this is achieved through proper attention; and spiritually—by ensuring that order is maintained in the synagogue so that there are always siddurim, Tehillim, Chumashim, etc., ready.
In connection with this, it is clear what your place should be and that you must always maintain this completely throughout the year—and especially during these days before Tishrei—the Days of Teshuvah and the month of Tishrei (which is explained elsewhere to be the seventh month—seven with festivals and days of favor etc.), when at that time the responsibility of the shamash is multiplied many times over. Hopefully you will do all of the above with joy and gladness of heart; one who comes to purify is assisted.
Blessings for good news and for being inscribed and sealed for good. In the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita—secretary.
Summary
This letter highlights how a shamash brings both physical brightness and spiritual order to a synagogue. The Rebbe teaches that fulfilling these duties with joy ensures Divine assistance—especially during spiritually significant times like Elul and Tishrei.
