Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter in which you write about your daughter Mrs... may she live, and the young man she has met, etc. I delayed my reply thinking perhaps the situation would become clearer in the meantime, as several important details are missing from your letter. One of the main ones is—whether the young man is mature in intellect and character beyond his years, since age is not decisive regarding an established life; rather, it is strength of mind and uprightness of intellect, etc.

Regarding a Jewish man and woman, one of the most essential matters is that they be traditional Jews in their daily lives; this is the path to a happy and blessed life from Hashem Who gives the Torah and commands its mitzvos.

Even though I have not received further details on this matter, since in your recent letter you again mention your daughter may she live, I do not wish to delay my response any longer. My opinion regarding your question is that acting with strong opposition is apparently not the way—even if opposition is necessary—because in our times such strong parental opposition immediately brings about an opposite reaction (even when dealing with good children etc.), as such opposition is interpreted as an attempt to impose authority and force adult opinions on "children" who still need guidance etc. In other words—it harms their sense of independence.

Regarding appropriate opposition: in my opinion what determines this is what was stated above—namely, if his conduct in daily life matches ancestral tradition; that is, if it aligns with our Torah of life and its mitzvos about which it says "v'chai bahem" (and you shall live by them). An important point—though its importance does not compare to the previous one—is as mentioned above: that he be mature beyond his years.

May it be Hashem's will—Who watches over each individual with Divine Providence—that you see much true nachas from your daughter, including a good match for her—good both materially and spiritually together. Especially now that we have entered the month of Adar when we are commanded to increase in joy; Hashem's command also grants strength and circumstances that bring joy.

With honor and blessing for good news in all the above and for a joyous Purim.

P.S. Heartfelt thanks for the information in your letter from 20 Shevat. Even though you minimized and abbreviated regarding your activities for Chabad at the gathering you wrote about (and before that), I received additional reports from Anash about both the "quantity" of your work and even more so about its "quality," especially—the charm and vitality within it. About these it says "v'chai bahem" (and you shall live by them): after Yechiel 18:5. That we are commanded to increase in joy: Taanit 29a; Magen Avraham Orach Chaim end of section 686.

Summary
