B"H, Sunday for the portion "Vayaakov Ish Tam Yoshev Ohalim", 5726.

To the community of Adas Yeshurun, lovers and supporters of Torah and mitzvah, may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

It has often been emphasized the saying of the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, that "A Jew must live with the times"—with the Torah time that is filled with the content and spirit of the weekly parsha.

We are now reading the portions that tell us about the lives of our forefathers, the first Jews: Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov. Avraham was the father of Yishmael and Yitzchak; Yitzchak was the father of Esav and Yaakov. But Yaakov Avinu's "mitato shleimah" (his bed was complete)—all his twelve sons and daughter remained faithful Jews. Despite Yishmael and Esav having fine parents and good Jewish homes, this was not a full guarantee that they would bring true Jewish nachas. For Hashem gave free choice. Each person can choose their path in life: the path of life and good or its opposite. Yishmael and Esav chose a wild, unrestrained path of material worldliness; this led them to a life of bow and arrow (Rovah Keshet) and sword (Ve'al Charbecha Tichyeh—"and by your sword you shall live") until this very day.

Yaakov Avinu, however, was a yoshev ohalim—a dweller in tents—and he not only sat alone in tents of Torah but always ensured that Torah tents would have continuity. Even when he had to go down to Egypt—and specifically because of this—he first sent Yehudah to establish a yeshivah there. Through this he achieved that all his children remained faithful Jews.

One might think: how can this approach of "yoshev ohalim" survive against the "ish sadeh," against the princes of Yishmael and chiefs of Esav, when Yaakov and his household are a small minority among them? The holy Torah teaches us—and assures us—that although in all generations Jews will be a minority among nations, a Jew should not be affected by this. As long as he follows Yaakov Avinu's path—the way of "yoshev ohalim," where the father himself has set times for Torah study and sends his children to learn in Torah schools and yeshivos—he is assured that all his children will remain faithful Jews, bringing him true Jewish nachas not only spiritually but also materially.

I hope that in the spirit of these current weekly portions, all lovers of Torah and mitzvah—and especially those involved with the yeshivah—will strengthen preparations for the upcoming annual initiative by Merkaz HaYeshivos Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch (on 24 Teves), to ensure its success both financially and spiritually. Hashem will certainly not remain indebted; whoever increases is granted increased blessing and success both materially and spiritually together.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that steadfast dedication to Torah values at home ensures lasting Jewish identity for one's children. Supporting Torah institutions strengthens both individual families and communal spiritual life.
