Shalom u'Vrachah!
After a long pause, I was pleased to receive your letter with the attached memorandum from the 19th of Kislev. The hope is strong—even though you do not mention it—that you are aware of the significance of this day: the redemption of Admor HaZaken, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, which is also our redemption and the salvation of our souls. Perhaps you also participated in the farbrengen held every year on this day, including several in Jerusalem, the Holy City.
May it be G‑d's will that this day influences all your days throughout the year in spreading traditional Judaism—our holy Torah, Torah of truth—and especially the light of Chassidus and its particular matters.
It goes without saying that I read your aforementioned memorandum with interest. Apparently, the calendar issue has once again been raised on the international agenda. May it be G‑d's will that at least our Jewish brethren will not lend a hand to those who seek to undermine matters of Judaism. Especially as is well known from Jewish history and hinted at in many places in our Sages' teachings: if not for such collaboration, no hand would have prevailed even over material matters—how much more so spiritual ones—of the Jewish people. In familiar language: if not for those "from among you," there would be no place for destruction.
Indeed, these days of Hanukkah also teach this lesson: The outbreak of Hellenizers who waved the banner of prevailing culture claimed that Israel should be like all nations and imitate gentile practices. If they had to allow certain things unique to Israel—i.e., Torah and mitzvos—they argued Torah should be studied only for wisdom and understanding; [the offering]—by bringing a pig into the Temple up to the altar; mitzvah candle—by defiling oils (but not destroying them), since their goal was that the menorah should be lit but with impure oil.
Unfortunately and painfully, even in our trial-filled times this issue still hovers among us: Hellenizers of all types and shades abound. It is difficult to elaborate further on such a distressing matter.
Incidentally (and you surely know as well), even the imprisonment related to Yud Tes Kislev happened only because Jews gave a hand [to informers], as is known.
Yet together with this, Admor HaZaken—the redeemer—warns in his famous Iggeres HaKodesh regarding liberation and redemption: about G‑d's abundant kindness toward us—that through all this we must not let our hearts become haughty over our brethren; rather, "may G‑d grant that their hearts mirror ours," which has always been Chabad's approach—to draw others closer to Torah and mitzvos (not G‑d forbid lowering Torah or mitzvah), based on Ahavas Yisrael which is one with love for G‑d and His Torah.
With honor and wishes for a joyous Hanukkah.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that both Yud Tes Kislev and Hanukkah are times to strengthen Jewish identity by spreading Torah and Chassidus with love for fellow Jews. Even when facing internal or external threats to tradition, unity rooted in Ahavas Yisrael remains essential.
