In response to your question—study the laws of tefillin until you are proficient in the necessary laws. Since you repeated your request as written—add to the above: the mitzvah of tefillin (in Sefer HaMitzvos by tzt"z), or Shaar HaTefillin in the Siddur.
Regarding the event you wrote about, see Shut tzt"z Shaar HaMiluyim vol. II. Be more precise in daily Chitas study and giving tzedakah before morning weekday prayers. May Hashem grant you success.
