Relativity, Science, and the Geocentric vs Heliocentric Debate

The Rebbe addresses the debate between geocentric and heliocentric models, explaining that according to modern relativity, science cannot definitively state which body is at rest or in motion. He notes that both models have unresolved questions and that science does not provide a clear answer.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter... in which you write about the two approaches regarding whether the earth or the sun revolves around the other, and the scientific perspective on this matter, etc. It is surprising that you wrote as you did, for surely you know that one of the foundations of the theory of relativity—which has been accepted by all scientists in recent decades—is: regarding a "system" of two bodies in relative motion to each other, it is impossible to determine which is at rest and which is moving. This is not due to a lack of current knowledge, but rather due to the very nature of these matters. That is, regarding this question and similar ones, science has no position; on the contrary—it actually negates any clear answer.

Furthermore—if one finds difficulties with one view, similar difficulties exist for the other view as well, as explained at length in the theory of relativity. From this it is understood—that if someone chooses for whatever reason to say that a particular body stands still while another revolves around it, from a scientific standpoint there can be no contradiction to this.

Incidentally—even before this theory arose there was never an absolute rejection of Ptolemy's system (that the earth always stands still and the sun revolves around it), only a statement and conclusion that there are more difficulties with this system than with Copernicus's system. But even regarding Copernicus's system there were several "difficulties" and misunderstandings raised. And this is not the place to elaborate.

... Of course now is not a time conducive for lengthy letters—but the great importance of matters of education and learning (in purity and holiness) prevails.

Summary

The Rebbe clarifies that according to modern science—specifically relativity—there is no definitive scientific stance on whether the earth or sun moves; both models have their own unresolved issues. The focus should remain on education and learning in purity.
