Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter of 13 Iyar with a delay; it was a response to my letter regarding your book. Regarding your main point—that you agree with me that mourning should be limited in time so as not to interfere with a person's primary task to be active and energetic, etc., but you wish to distinguish between mourning and memory—it is clear that changing the name here makes no difference; what matters are the results. The test is: does the memory or mourning bring an increase in holiness and justice in the world, or the opposite?

As for your comment that there are departed individuals with special qualities or merit connected to specific actions—so their memory does not diminish the energy and vitality of their parents—we see clearly that on the contrary: children who do not excel in special qualities are often loved more deeply by their parents. As our Sages say: "Love dependent on something—when that thing ceases, so does the love" (Avot 5:16), which proves that even before the thing ceased, the love was not as deep and true as love that is not dependent on anything—in chassidic terms: essential love—because children are from the essence of their parents.

However, this reason still does not fully explain why love should be greater for children who do not particularly excel; it would suffice for it to be equal. But since there is both essential love and love dependent on something, the latter weakens—that is, covers over—the essential love. For example—and even more clearly—we have seen in our times (and even more so in previous generations during periods of persecution and crusades), that simple people gave up their lives for our faith more easily than those with intellect and understanding. Although both groups are "believers, children of believers," and both have a Jewish core as the source of their self-sacrifice, those with intellect tend to direct all matters according to reason; habit becomes second nature. Even here they needed to find rationale and understanding. In contrast, simple people facing a test of faith have their Jewish core awakened without any coverings or limitations.

Similarly in our case: if love depends on something—even something very great—it is still limited and limits even essential love; it covers over it due to habitually tying love to that thing.

To conclude with a timely matter: on the eve of 12–13 Tammuz—the days of redemption and victory of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe (of blessed memory), in his struggle to defend our people's sanctities despite dictatorship and mighty rule in his country—you surely know about those days. Their main point in my view is how great is the power of one Jew if he only exercises firm resolve and true self-sacrifice. Not everyone merits this level, but conditions in our free countries are incomparably easier; G‑d only demands according to each person's strength—as long as it is fully utilized.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true love transcends merit or achievement—it is rooted in essence. Grief or memory should lead to increased holiness rather than hinder one's mission. Every Jew possesses immense power when acting with resolve and self-sacrifice.
