Marriage, Religious Differences, and Genuine Commitment

The Rebbe writes that marriage should not be used as a means to educate or change a partner's religious outlook. Genuine commitment to a religious lifestyle must come from within, not as a concession for marriage. Waiting until true change is evident is advised for both parties' benefit.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 21st, you write that for some time you have known an Avrech, and there was a period when you became close to each other. However, what prevents further closeness is that the Avrech is not observant, which also led to a break in your meetings. Yet at the end of the summer he wrote to you, etc.

In general, regarding shidduch and marriage—this is not an issue whose purpose is education. Even though it is obvious that when two people become close and marry it is impossible for one not to influence the other, and it is natural to want one's partner to align with one's worldview—this relates only to details and compatibility but not to a complete change from one extreme to another in worldview or daily conduct and similar matters.

What adds further concern in your case is that he explicitly says he will only learn about religion and become observant after marrying you—in other words, he makes it clear from the outset that he does this only for your sake (which shows how stable and firm his religious commitment would be if only this brings him to be observant). Furthermore, since Judaism requires many daily actions and boundaries, it is inevitable that at times he will think he is making sacrifices for you and doing things he does not truly accept or which bother him. Such thoughts can lead to very undesirable consequences in your relationship.

Since you already stopped seeing him last summer, it can be hoped that if you reflect on what was said here and decide to end the matter (at least until he actually becomes observant, lives a religious lifestyle for some time, and both of you see that this way of life genuinely appeals to him), you will easily realize this is the right step for you—for both your benefit.

May Hashem Yisbarach, Who watches over every individual with Divine Providence, truly guide her on a good path.

Blessings,
On behalf of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Shlita
Secretary

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true religious commitment must come from within; marriage should not be used as leverage for such change. Waiting until genuine transformation occurs ensures lasting harmony and benefits both individuals.
