Shalom u'Vrachah!
As the new year approaches for us and all Israel for good and blessing, I hereby express my blessing to you and all yours: may you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year both materially and spiritually.
On this occasion I wish to address the content of your last letter, in which you wrote about the greatness of Torah study as the only positive influence capable of changing human nature, etc. Indeed, there is no dispute regarding "Talmud Torah k'neged kulam" (Torah study is equal to them all), and "Gadol Talmud shemeivi lidei maaseh" (Great is study for it leads to action), which needs no lengthy explanation or proof.
However, the difficulty is that in our times—in all places but especially in the United States—people are generally more practical than theoretical. In this country in particular, those engaged in theoretical matters are very few by comparison. Of course, I am not here to evaluate the advantages or disadvantages of this; that is not my purpose—I only wish to point out reality. Therefore, from an educational perspective, one cannot rely solely on Torah study with the expectation that the student will derive all conclusions from his learning and that "the light within Torah will return him to good," since all this requires much contemplation and time. And as is human nature, enthusiasm and pursuit for something requiring much time tend to dissipate until eventually—the opportunity is lost over time.
From this point above—in our country more than anywhere else—reality demands that together with Torah study there must immediately be awakening and appropriate influence to align actual conduct with what is learned.
I have already spoken at length elsewhere that those who have influence in education must recognize the nature of youth being educated and place greater trust in their inner abilities—not fearing that if they are given full influence they will not be able or willing to accept it. In truth their capacity for absorption is greater than imagined. This is also a key point in my general letter for Rosh Hashanah (a copy enclosed).
If you wish to say so—this is a foundation of our faith: Emunas Yisrael Saba (the faith of our ancestor Israel), as our Torah says: "The righteous resemble their Creator," even saying elsewhere: "Just as the Holy One creates worlds so too Yaakov creates worlds." All the more so can one create a Jewish soul—which itself is an entire world—that is, create a new being by transforming it from one extreme to another.
According to Chassidus' explanation that mitzvah comes from 'tzavta' (connection) and union—and that through performing a mitzvah we fulfill "You who cleave to Hashem your G‑d," it becomes even clearer how we resemble our Creator.
When contemplating an individual being educated who seems extremely limited—when one influences him to align his life with his learning in Hashem's Torah through an actual life of Torah and mitzvos—one uncovers unimaginable soul powers: powers of the G‑dly soul bound and connected with the living G‑d.
In a lighter vein—it would be worthwhile trying this approach even on a remote chance since it concerns pikuach nefesh (saving a life). But in my opinion this is not doubtful at all; rather it is absolute certainty.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while Torah study is vital, practical guidance and trust in students’ inner strengths are crucial for true transformation. By combining learning with immediate action and confidence in youth’s abilities, educators can reveal deep spiritual potential.
