מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו וכן הפ"ש אשר מסר על ידי הנוסע ממחנו להכא.
ובמה שכותב אודות נסיעה ובקור כאן.
כבר ידוע ומפורסם שאין דעתי נוחה מזה כלל וכלל ומכמה טעמים נוסף על זה שנסיעה כזו כרוכה בכמה טרדות והוצאות, הוצאות במרץ והוצאות בממון והוצאות גם בעניני בריאות,
וביחד עם זה אשר כר נרחב לכל אחד ואחד מאנ"ש בפאריז וסביבותי' לפעול מתאים לתפקיד האדם וכדבר משנה, אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני, ז.א. הליכה מחיל אל חיל בתורה ומצותי' בהנוגע לעצמו ובהנוגע להשפעה על הזולת.
נוסף על כל הנ"ל, בהתבונני על אלו שבאו לכאן, ובהשינוי שחל בהם, לגבי אופן חייהם לפני זה בפאריז, מוכרחני לומר אשר ברובם, נתגבר פזור הנפש שלהם ביותר וביותר, כמה מזמנם ניתן על ענינים שבאופן חייהם לפני בואם לכאן, לא הי' בזה כל הכרח כלל, ויכולים היו להקדיש זמן זה לרוחניות ועכ"פ לענינים שיש בהם תכלית, ולא אבוד זמן על ענינים טפלים ענינים של חיי שעה ועוד פחות מזה. ואם בכלל הודיעונו חז"ל, שישיבת כרכים קשה, עאכו"כ בקור בכרך בארצוה"ב, שזוהי מדינה מפורסמת בפזור הנפש, הנחות העולם, וההוא ה;63636#&א טומעל פון דער גאס, אלא שמובן שבד' אמות של בני ישראל, הגאס הוא של היתר, אבל מטשטש ומשפיל את האדם מדרגתו בכמה וכמה שטחים. והלואי היו רובם של אנ"ש שבאו לכאן מצרפת שומעים לקולי, ובחסד וברחמים מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב חוזרים לפאריז וסביבותי' למלאות שם שליחותם להחזקת היהדות בכלל ולהפצת המעינות ביחוד.
וכל הנ"ל אמור גם לאלו שבקרו כאן לאיזה שבועות, כמו שהראה הנסיון שבזבזו זמנם ומרצם כנ"ל והעיקר על האפליות שלהם כאן, שצריך חסיד ליתן הזמן והכחות שלו לא רק על עניני נה"ב אלא גם על למטה מזה, על ענינים שלא הי' עולה בדעתם כלל לפני בואם לכאן, ואין להאריך בדבר המצער ביותר.
והלואי הי' מפרסם דברי אלה באופן שיפעלו גם על אחרים, וגם על אלו שבאו לכאן, לעשות ככל האמור לעיל.
בברכה לבריאות הנכונה, ואשר מתוך מנוחה שמחה וטוב לבב יעסוק בתורה ובמצות במקומו עתה, וישמש דוגמא לכל אנ"ש אשר שם וגם אשר מחוצה לשם שיעשו ג"כ ככה, וכבר נאמר עשה האלקים את האדם ישר והמה בקשו חשבונות רבים.

I acknowledge receipt of your letter as well as the regards you sent through the traveler from our camp to here.
Regarding what you write about traveling and visiting here: It is already well known and publicized that I am not at all in favor of this for several reasons. In addition to the fact that such a trip involves many distractions and expenses—expenditures of energy, money, and even health—there is also the fact that every one of Anash in Paris and its surroundings has a wide field to act according to one's purpose as stated in the Mishnah: "I was created to serve my Creator," meaning advancing from strength to strength in Torah and mitzvos regarding oneself and influencing others.
Furthermore, when I consider those who have come here and the changes that have occurred in them compared to their way of life before in Paris, I must say that for most of them their inner distraction has greatly increased. Much of their time is spent on matters which previously were not at all necessary in their lives before coming here; they could have devoted this time to spirituality or at least to purposeful matters instead of wasting time on trivialities or even less than that.
And if our Sages have already told us that living in large cities is difficult, how much more so visiting a metropolis in America—a country known for inner distraction, worldly attitudes, and the tumult of the street. Of course, within the four cubits of a Jew everything is permissible, but it still blurs and lowers a person’s level in many areas.
If only most of Anash who came here from France would listen to my voice—and with kindness and mercy, out of joy and gladness of heart—return to Paris and its surroundings to fulfill their mission there: strengthening Judaism generally and spreading the wellsprings particularly.
All this applies also to those who visited here for several weeks. Experience shows they wasted their time and energy as above—especially on their own distractions here. A chassid must devote his time and strength not only on matters related to his animal soul but even lower things—matters he never would have considered before coming here. There is no need to elaborate further on such a distressing matter.
If only my words would be publicized so they would influence others—including those who have come here—to do as stated above.
Blessings for proper health; may you occupy yourself with Torah and mitzvos where you are now with tranquility, joy, and gladness of heart—and serve as an example for all Anash there and elsewhere so they too will do likewise. As it is said: "G‑d made man upright but they sought many calculations." Blessings for good news in all mentioned above.
