Shalom u'Vrachah!
... Seemingly, you should have written about the matter before your trip and not after it—it is questionable what benefit there is in explaining it now. However, since every man and woman must reflect on every event and occurrence in their lives—certainly one can learn some lesson for their service of G‑d and their own life [as is known from the saying of the Baal Shem Tov, which we have often heard from my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe: everything a Jewish person sees or hears is a lesson for his own service of G‑d, as per the Mishnah: "I was created to serve my Maker"], I interpret your writing to me as intending to emphasize the following point:
In our era—the time of Ikvesa d'Meshicha (the footsteps of Mashiach), as explained at the end of tractate Sotah, and based on the well-known saying from the Ramban in his Iggeres to his son that "whoever is more sanctified than his fellow..."—unfortunately there is a unique blemish in Eretz HaKodesh (the Holy Land), namely partisanship. This has reached even the leaders of communities and circles that are truly G‑d-fearing. As with anything that diverges from Torah and mitzvos and people devote themselves to it—no matter what it is—it inevitably detracts from devotion to Torah and mitzvos (even if rarely it may help them), so too with partisanship. Even though currently in Eretz HaKodesh partisanship has brought certain benefits among religious circles, it is impossible—and history shows—that in some matters it does not detract from spreading Torah and mitzvos. It is well known that great leaders of Israel in previous generations opposed partisanship among religious Jews; even today some great leaders in Eretz HaKodesh are reserved about this, and their stance is known.
Similarly, Chabad's approach from its inception until today has been non-partisan and above party lines. For this reason—the inner point which must be the foundation of holy work for educators in the spirit of Torah tradition—is that they must be especially careful to avoid any involvement with parties, even religious ones. Education must be truly independent—Torah education. If there is doubt regarding any detail of this work, they should not get involved in clarifying it—especially if such clarification requires investigation or inquiry.
As stated above, I do not wish to enter into this subject further in my letter to you because such investigation contradicts your role if you intend to be a teacher dedicated to pure holiness. My intent here is only to emphasize once again that at least from now on you should influence your fellow students to avoid all forms of partisanship and discord. Instead, dedicate your time and energy to ascending on the path leading to Beit El—our Torah is a living Torah; it is one Torah whose measure exceeds any measure or party; both revealed Torah and inner Torah together.
May it be G‑d's will that you succeed as much as possible in this direction; our sages have assured us: "You have labored and found [success]" applies here. Your dedication in rallying your friends toward this goal should atone for past actions you wrote about, and may Hashem increase His blessings upon them both personally and in their influence on others.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true Torah education must transcend all forms of partisanship—even among religious groups—and focus solely on unity through independent dedication to Torah values. Educators should inspire others toward harmony rather than division.
