In reply to your letter, which was received late; in accordance with your request the reply is being sent without waiting its turn^[1].

In it you write about the Achei Temimim yeshivah in …^[2] and its administration.

The question and doubt are surprising, in a matter that is well known, namely:

It is known that when my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of sainted memory^[3], founded the central yeshivah Tomchei Temimim in Brooklyn, and afterwards founded – through his emissaries – branches of it in the provincial towns under the name of Achei Temimim yeshivos^[4]…

he also set the order that his emissaries in the provincial towns are to run the Achei Temimim yeshivos where they were founded, together with communal workers and Anash of the place, in the form of a board of directors or the like^[5].

And in any difficult matter^[6] that could not be resolved on the spot by the shliach and the board, they would turn about it and consult with the central administration in the central yeshivah in Brooklyn.

And if this too did not suffice, they would turn to my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of sainted memory, and he would give his opinion.

All the Achei Temimim yeshivos in the United States conducted themselves by this order, and they also succeeded. It is understood that nobody wishes to change this order, especially since he has seen actual success in this conduct.

And since I am confident that all the communal workers of the Achei Temimim yeshivah of … intend the goal that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, set forth – to make the Torah great and glorious^[7] through this holy institution, by educating its students appropriately, in the purity of holiness – they will surely conduct themselves in the said manner from now on as well, and the merit of the many will help them^[8] with outstanding success in establishing the institution firmly and in its development.

And surely through this^[9] there will also be an increase in the blessings of G‑d, blessed be He, and His success in the personal affairs of all those who make efforts for, and help, this holy institution with their body, their money and their soul, or with all three together.

With blessings for good news^[10] in all the above, with peace of mind, and for a kosher and joyous Pesach.

4. Achei Temimim yeshivos (ישיבות אחי תמימים): בערי השדה, "in the provincial towns": outside the center. The Achei Temimim yeshivos were the branches of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in towns of the United States; for example, the Achei Temimim yeshivah in Buffalo, founded by the Previous Rebbe in Elul 5703 (1943) (Chabadpedia).

5. A board of directors or the like (ועד דירעקטארען וכיו"ב): אנ"ש = אנשי שלומנו, "our people", the Chassidim; ועד דירעקטארען, "board of directors" (the English words in Yiddish letters); וכיו"ב = וכיוצא בו, "or the like".

6. Any difficult matter (בכל דבר הקשה): In the words of the verse on the order of judges proposed by Yisro [Shemos 18:26]: "ושפטו את העם בכל עת את הדבר הקשה יביאון אל משה וכל הדבר הקטן ישפוטו הם", "And they judged the people at all times: the difficult matter they would bring to Moshe, and every small matter they would judge themselves." So too in the order the Previous Rebbe set: the shliach and the local board, the central administration, and in the hardest matter – the Rebbe.

7. To make the Torah great and glorious (להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה): From the verse [Yeshayahu 42:21]: "ה' חפץ למען צדקו יגדיל תורה ויאדיר", "G‑d desired, for the sake of His righteousness, to make the Torah great and glorious"; Rashi: "and therefore He makes the Torah great and glorious for you". הק' = הקדוש, "holy".

8. The merit of the many will help them (וזכות הרבים מסייעתם): After the Mishnah [Avos 2:2] on those who work for the community: "וכל העמלים עם הצבור, יהיו עמלים עמהם לשם שמים, שזכות אבותם מסייעתן וצדקתם עומדת לעד", "And all who work with the community should work with them for the sake of Heaven, for the merit of their fathers helps them and their righteousness endures forever."

9. Through this (עי"ז): עי"ז = על ידי זה; השי"ת = השם יתברך, "G‑d, blessed be He".

10. Good news (בשו"ט): בשו"ט = בשורות טובות.
